Had to look that up. My wife and I dumped the tv (literally) Dec, 82. Even quit going to movies. Our kids turned pretty creative during the 80s, able to find endless ways to have fun. In the winter, basketball in the barnyard would become nerf basketball in the house, with ridiculous intensity, lol.

skip the first episode of b7, you can watch it after you watch the rest of the episodes if you want, but it is super slow and not really relevant to the rest of the series.

I can summarize it in a few words

Blake was the leader of the resistance against federation, he was a threat so he was framed for child diddling, and sentenced to a penal colony. I think the only point was to show the federation was evil, and corrupt while Blake was good.

To me it was more than just a space western. I like Star Trek's futuristic takes on real navy historical events.
Like dealing with an enemy who can cloak and the Enterprise crew saying it's unfair...always made me think about the Allies fighting the German U-boats in WW1. Or when some of them are captured and send a message encoded in some way that only the Starfleet folks can know it's there -- reminds me of the real life Captain Bainbridge of the USS Philadelphia in the early 19th century. The times they have to chose to destroy a federation ship to keep it from being used by the enemy reminds me of Stephen Decatur's crew from a real ship named Enterprise having to burn the Philadelphia. And in one of the Next Generation episodes (I think the one where Picard becomes a Borg) the Enterprise shows up for a battle too late and the crew spends a minute staring in awe of the death and destruction. That scene always makes me wonder what it was like for the real crew on the WW2 Enterprise to arrive at Pearl Harbor too late. (A scene I'm glad they put in the new Midway movie.)

Star Trek had that military aspect to it, but they tried to play it down. The episode, The Balance of Terror was adapted from 1957 film The Enemy Below. Star Trek tried to avoid military force unless required as a last resort. Star Trek was largely adapted from the Western. Think of Kirk as Marshall Dillon, Spock as Chester his loyal deputy, and Doctor McCoy as Doc. It's about the interplay between the main characters. In that context, its the Miss Kitty character that is missing, which was to be Grace Lee Whitney's character before Roddenberry changed things.

I liked that aspect of it. Peace through strength, but no unnecessary wars.

I loved it although the animation style took a little getting used to.

I remember watching B7 late Saturday nights on the local PBS station when I was a kid. I remeber it being really cool to my nerdy pre-teen self. Never been able to find it on DVD in the US to rewatch it.

Yes, but IMHO, demoting, and then removing Grace Lee Whitney's character as Kirk's love interest shortened the show's prime time run. Roddenberry never wanted Kirk permanently domesticated, just to have a series of flings. In The Wrath of Khan we learned that Kirk had a son, but then he was killed off just as quickly. Kirk as a family man, or even a father, was never really permitted by "the creator". It was perfectly OK for Kirk's family to be dying in the story line though. Sam Kirk was found dead in the final episode of Season 1, Operation -- Annihilate!
