Square, a company that supplies point of sale (POS) systems to small businesses that allow for credit card processing, has been down all day Thursday, affecting users in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, France, and Spain. Square is one of the largest suppliers of POS systems to all kinds of businesses, like restaurants, salons, tattoo parlors, boutiques, and much more. According to the website, Square is “Trusted by millions of businesses worldwide.”
Without the ability to process credit cards, many businesses have reported turning away customers who don’t have cash—or taking an enormous risk and writing down credit card information to process later, not knowing if the card will go through. Despite Square’s customers losing thousands of dollars per hour, their customer service line was shut down and goes directly to a voice message that says the service line is unavailable.
Square has posted very few updates on its Twitter/X account, with no information about what caused the issue or when it will be fixed. “We are currently experiencing issues with multiple Square services,” they wrote on Twitter/X. “We understand how important it is for your business that our services be up and running, and we are actively working toward a fix.”

Just the NSA testing out their backdoor...
Could be an innate IT related issue, but...I have learned not to trust anything, anywhere, anymore.
It is a hard and sad lesson to have to learn.
Oh, but digital money is the way of the future!
heh
The technology trap is about to slam shut.
Aren’t electronic transactions instead of real money great?
Hello...Eggs...meet basket.
I don’t have a problem with electronic transactions.
I have every problem in the world and under the sun with mandated electronic transactions and the elimination of real money.
If people don’t have enough cash laying around to go a week without credit/debit/ebt cards, then I don’t feel sorry for them.
Cash as in paper money kept in your drawer somewhere at home? Or cash in the bank ( which can still be hacked )?
“Cash as in paper money kept in your drawer somewhere at home? Or cash in the bank ( which can still be hacked )?”
Banks are meaningless, unless in a vault, and then only maybe. But it’s pretty simple: How often do you get broken into and robbed? If no more than once every 10 years or so, then is losing $1000 each time such a big deal (and that’s assuming they even find it)...in other words, why not keep some cash around?
Always, always keep cash on hand! We just went through a hurricane and gas stations and some stores were taking cash only. They weren’t gouging at all but wouldn’t take cc’s.
Absolute Charlie foxtrot yesterday! Thankful paypal wasn’t down too, saved the day.
Everyone should have $1000 tucked away at home.

A Puerto Rican dude that I worked with had family up in the hills in the Old Country. When they got whalloped by hurricanes, they went MONTHS without power, meaning cash-only. His mom didn’t trust banks...but then here mattress become a bank for her village (they all respected her enough to not try anything cute).
The BEST WAY to end talk of a Digital Currency is to simply SHUT DOWN electronic payments for a week...hopefully some Russian hackers will do just that.

Absolute minimum...but yes, even that will buy people a lot of time.
Yes, I met some friends for appetizers and a couple of cold ones yesterday in the early evening and the pub was having issues with Square Pay as we cashed out. They had us select “Go Offline” and it would allow us to complete the transaction.
I wonder if that’s been resolved yet.
We keep more than $1000 because when the military steps in were going to be drinking a lot of bourbon. 😉
So maybe this financial company manages gift cards too.
