In the coming weeks, a Giant Food market in D.C. will clear its beauty and health aisles of all national labels. No more Tide, Colgate or Advil, only store brands. Shoppers also will have to present their receipts to an employee before exiting the store.
It’s the regional supermarket chain’s most overt gambit against the rampant theft that’s plaguing retailers of all sizes. It’s also a potential last-ditch effort to avoid shutting down the unprofitable store on Alabama Avenue — the only major grocer east of the Anacostia River in Ward 8.
“We want to continue to be able to serve the community, but we can’t do so at the level of significant loss or risk to our associates that we have today,” said Giant president Ira Kress.
Shoplifting, organized crime and violence have become significant concerns for regional and national retailers. Home Depot, Target, Lowe’s, Dollar Tree, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Ulta are among those that flagged shrink — the depletion of inventory caused by something other than sales — during their second-quarter earnings calls. Growing losses have spurred giants like Walmart to shutter locations.
“Our team continues to face an unacceptable amount of retail theft and organized retail crime,” Target chief executive Brian Cornell told investors last month. “During the first five months of this year, our stores saw a 120 percent increase in theft incidents involving violence or threats of violence.”

How soon before they sue those manufactures for developing products people want to steal ala Kia and Hyundai?
Hope they do exactly that
The Giant near me has permanently closed the one entrance/exit, has put some items inside clear, plastic boxes, and has a security guard at times.
There is no place in this country that blacks won’t ruin where they exist in number.

RE: “Shoppers also will have to present their receipts to an employee before exiting the store.”
They will be strip searched, given a polygraph test, fingerprinted and have an audit of the their bank accounts, credit card use and IRS records.
“And thank you for shopping with us as a loyal customer.”
Q: “Who will be the first delivery only big box store?”
A: Amazon.
Could be a great entry level employment opportunity.
Go to the secure & armored order desk and hand the clerk your grocery list. Stock boys pulls the merchandise. You give the clerk cash or credit card. Get your groceries.
Really not much different than ordering from Amazon.
As noted in another thread, the authorities have drones overhead watching backyards. The shoppers can be observed and recorded as they leave home and then arrive at the store parking lot and go inside.
Audio and visual recordings inside. Every move to pick up an item and read a label will be analyzed by AI.
The same software doing the facial recognition matches to criminal records will analyze the positive and negative emotions expressed by the shoppers (as with the Smart TV cameras at home)
This is what a collapsing nation looks like.
Headed to uninhabitability.
Good idea.
“I’m guessing it’s easier to resell national brands?”
Exactly.
There was an article a few years ago that stated that Tide detergent was being used as “street” currency” in lieu of dollars in the inner cities.
That sounds an awful lot like how Enchanted Keys became street currency in Neverwinter Online, and in response the game makers made keys bind on pickup.
They should replace those items on the shelf with their unsold cans of Bud Light. It would be a good way to get rid of it.
As I am reading the first paragraph I have a flash intuitive thought…
This will lead to these stores, if they want to stay open, forcing all shoppers to use instacart, private cars, and pay way more for groceries. This because the additional help for store personnel to do the picking, the screening and hiring of drivers, additional computer operators to process the orders and the scheduling, and, of course, the end of paper currency as a medium of exchange.
We will be forced by the breakdown of the social contract, the death of Judeo/Christian morality, and the corruption of the political/legal/judicial institutions into a life that resembles those 15 minute cities everyone is talking about.
Some may think these are the future, and I am terrified that they are right. Orwellian on steroids!
Ebay says “Leave them alone!”
yep, just like the bad old days. all the good stuff was behind the counter or in a case. You had to ask the cashier for what you wanted. they brought it to you. you paid. everyone’s happy.
The real problem is that D.C. is not purely a federal jurisdiction. There should be no civilians in D.C. other than federal workers and tourists.
On the other hand, I’ve had a receipt-checker discover I was double-charged for an item when leaving Costco.
Costco is different. Inspection is part of your membership contract.
