Haven’t read Shirer, but I remember wading through Konrad Heiden’s Der Fuhrer in translation, written in 1944, pretty dense prose. A wealth of contemporaneous information in that, about his love affair with his niece, the internecine struggles for power between Adolf and other factions in the Party, how he ultimately emerged on top after the Putsch and its aftermath, what his close associates thought of him personally, his relationship with the homos before 1934, etc., etc., up to and including the big purge in 1934.

It is so footnoted and deeply cross researched— it is a reference text. Shirer was in Vienna and Weimar. Laborious interviews of people like General Halder, and General Speidel (who survived the July 20 1944 kill hitler plot, to survive the war and lead NATO for W. Germany, the other plotters, like Rommel who was outed, suicided or were hung by piano wire, loosened and hung again. hitler was of course a monster). Excellent read over many sittings it is so detailed including Nuremberg trials, doctor trials and the concentration camp female and male staff sadists— what a crew.
This is a fascinating bit of secret audio of Hitler speaking to Finnish Marshall Mannerheim in 1942.
The main things are, it’s probably the only audio of Hitler speaking in a normal voice, and also his bluntness of the situation in Russia.
