I have the old first iPhone SE and I’ve replaced the charging port TWICE ,LOL
To: butlerweave
The first gen SE’s are great — so compact and I like the styling with the squared off edges. I was hanging on to my old SE but finally upgraded to an iPhone 12 Mini, and I like it even better. It keeps what’s cool about the SE but with up-to-date performance and battery life. Definitely recommend for folks who like a compact phone.

...keep the magnetic lighting port adapter plugged into the phone so it is protected from pocket lint, dust, dirt, and the wear-and-tear of being unplugged all the time.

Good idea.

They have no choice, the EU has mandated USB C for phones. Apple won’t be able for sell phones with the lightning connector - game over.

The EU estimates the rule could save Europeans 250 million euros per year on chargers. The EU also said old chargers account for about 11,000 tons of e-waste per year in the region. Huh? The port on the phone doesn't have anything to do with the charger. Apple's own chargers have USB-C on the charger side and a USB-C to Lightning cable to connect to the phone. You can also buy a USB-A to Lightning cable -- Walmart seems to have them in every color of the rainbow -- to connect your iphone to any USB-A power source you happen to have handy.

The major setback to iPhones and iPads, is that they don't had SD card slots ☹️ I agree. That's why I've never bought an ipad for an e-reader. I do have an iphone though, mainly because apple does a much better job than any android maker that I know of with patching for security issues. My Samsung tablet has seen I think 2 security updates since I got it. I'm not that concerned, since I pretty much leave the wifi and bluetooth off unless I need to load new books on it.

I have had lightning connections on the phone fail due to pocket lint build up.

Apple has announced the upcoming iPhone15 models will be equipped with USB-C ports replacing the Lightning Port at the EU’s regulatory demand to meet its standard requiring all portable digital devices standardize on USB-C charging ports. When governments get involved in mandating technology, they end innovation and advancement. Had the EU regulators done their standardizations a few years earlier, then they would have standardized on USB-B mini or micro ports instead of the far more advanced and faster USB C port. What happens in five years when a much faster, more efficient and far stronger USB-D or USB-E would offer far superior performance for all mobile devices but the inertia of regulation is blocking the adoption of the improvements? Governments move slowly to make changes. One advantage of shifting to USB-C is that if Apple does it right, the format can double as an Intel developed 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 4 Fast and up to 100Watts of fast charging Port, which can be exceedingly fast for data exchange between Apple devices with the USB-C/Thunderbolt capable cable. Apple Macs, MacBooks and iPad Pro have these Thunderbolt combo ports. — PING

I just gave my wife a birthday present that was an 11 box with a note saying “you get a 15 when they come out.” It’s time to update, and hers has a crack anyway. But with the 15s so close, there’s no way I was going to get her a 14. She’s good with that.

The next iPhones, expected in September as usual, could have a feature that no iPhone has ever had: a generic charging port.Pretty sure Android has had these for years.

I hate the company Apple (this goes back to the 80s computers.. so it is a solid hate, lol)...
BUT, I do have iPhone and iPad because they are so much better quality and secure than Androids (I also use my Samsung tablet to screen my 2 outside cameras 😉).
There just is no comparison between the 2. iPhone obliterates Android.
Computers, on the other hand, I build my own so no brand name will match (although I use all parts and peripherals from ASUS, unless they don't make it).

Never understood why Apple kept lightning so long (besides the obvious ‘only we own it’ thing). Their laptops mostly switched to USB-C, and for some, all they have is two USB-C ports. No regular USB, no hdmi or displayport output, just one or two USB-C plugs so you still have to buy an adaptor hub to be able to plug anything more than the power in. And iPads have mostly switched, so why wouldn’t the phones have gone at the same time?

#21 I bought a usb port for a LG phone at amazon for about $4.50

The major setback to iPhones and iPads, is that they don't had SD card slots ☹️ You can get a lightening to mini SD card adapter barely as big as the mini SD card. I have one each for lightening and usb C with 512 gig mini SD cards, works fine.
People talk like usb C cables are simply like an extension chord they are not they contain micro processors that determine how much current or data the cable will handle. There are cables that carry 5, 10, 20, up to 40 megabit data streams, but they all look alike, how cool is that? The charging rate is also determine by the type of cable, so to be sure you get the best, use the best cable which I think currently is a thunderbolt 4 type.
The EU would have done better to mandate the type and size of the charger dongle than the connector of which there are many, same with power tools. Car batteries are more standard, at least in size, and the world still turns.

In all honesty - USB-C should have been adopted a few years back - and Apple knew this when they went too far with the MacBook line - but got it right with the iPad...
