What previous California storms could show about Hurricane Hilary

In September 1939, Southern Californians were pummeled by four tropical cyclones that hit the region within weeks of each other. Each of the four made landfall at varying stages of cyclone development.

[T]he first three storms were remnants of hurricanes with tropical storm-level winds, moving into the area after making landfall in Baja California — a similar path that Hurricane Hilary appears to be taking.

The most notable of the bunch was the fourth storm to make landfall in the region, touching down in Southern California on Sept. 25. The unnamed storm hit near San Pedro...becoming the first and only recorded instance of a tropical storm making landfall in the Southern California region directly.

Winds during the storm reached speeds as high as 50 miles per hour in the region, NASA said. The storm also brought upwards of five inches of rain to parts of the Los Angeles basin and 12 inches of rain to surrounding mountain areas.

Flooding due to the unprecedented levels of precipitation left thousands stranded in their homes. According to historians, some streets had standing water as deep as three feet.

Over 100 people were killed as a result of the final storm that month, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association reports from the time. Roughly half died due to flooding, while the other half drowned at sea.

After the storm tore through the region, parts of Southern California were left with over $2 million — or an estimated $42.4 million based on 2023 inflation — in damages to structures and agriculture, NWS said.

Sprinkles near Redondo Beach. It might accumulate an inch or so per the weather sites. Sure Palm Springs and Vegas are getting rain but the coastal area isn’t really going to get a years worth of rain 😂

California residents to be issued $700. But get out now or trust your life to Newsom.

Watching Fox this morning, and LA is going to get 40 mph winds. That’s not even a serious storm anymore.

Panic porn.

We are getting hammered outside of LA in the foothills. Roads are already starting to flood. It’s coming down in buckets.

I live in Palm Desert Ca., I work at Home Depot part time, OMG the media has had EVERYONE in such a frenzy I expected them to start building arks and gathering up 2 of every animal!! The customers were just going nuts!! I knew in my gut it wasn’t going to be ANYTHING like they were SCREAMING, first there was not an ounce of humidity in the air it was still a very dry heat, there would ALWAYS BE massive humidity before a BIG STORM!! So far we have had NORMAL rain it has not rained in the last 3 hours AND there is not a drop of wind!! The media creating HYSTERIA again!!!

It’s not a hurricane.

It will rain a lot.

It’s starting to rain hatter, but nothing abnormal.

The hype has been heavy.

Still sprinkling near the beach. I’m sure there will be rain and some heavy rain later. Nothing unusual. What I think adds to this is every rescue and emergency unit in the area is at the ready. Lots of Sunday triple time pay to go around.

Isn’t anyone going to tell Hillary Clinton jokes?

If you want to read about a big blow, you'll have to follow Bill Klintoon's career.

Where I am it is just a steady light rain.
There will be mudslides later on.
Earlier today there was a earthquake near Ojai. Mag 5.0 Depth 0.7 miles
That is about 40 miles from me but you could still feel it quite a bit in the San Fernando valley.
It was a rolling one for maybe 15/20 seconds.
My phone sent out an alert moments later.

https://scedc.caltech.edu/recent/Quakes/quakes0.html

If it was Hawaii / Maui they would not be any alert because people might panic or something.
