Florida town overrun with peacocks turning to vasectomies to control population

PINECREST, Fla. (WFOR) – A suburban Florida town overrun with peacocks has come up with a solution to its overpopulation.

The male birds in Pinecrest, Florida, will be getting vasectomies.

Residents have complained the fowl are scratching their roofs and cars, making messes on their driveways, and their squawks are a nuisance.

The procedure on one bird can stop between six to 12 females from reproducing.

The Miami-Dade County commissioners approved the plan and are launching the pilot program in a few weeks.

A county commissioner says if the plan works in Pinecrest, they may use it in other communities, such as South Miami and Coral Gables.

A neighbor had a couple about a decade or so. They’d come over on occasion and were fun to see. Chicks were on my land till a coyote got them and their mom. Dad would still fly over on occasion, rather sad. My recollection they mostly traveled on the ground through the woods. Probably should have kept them in a wired corral, preferably with the donkeys who would keep the coyotes away. I’m sure they’d taste fine.

“Any such medical procedure would have to be done only under General Anesthesia. “

Today it’s probably just a PILL that will sterilize the male.

This is so timely and coincidental for me! We had a bunch of friend over for dinner last night and the discussion turned to how we control the local deer population. Then one of our friend mentioned the out-of-control peacock population when he lived in Palos Verdes Estates many years ago. On his first night staying with his then-girlfriend (soon his wife), he was waken from slumber in the wee hours to a blood curdling scream! He thought a woman was being raped right outside his window. It was the peacocks!

We were joking about animal birth control and my friends decided that I (since I’m retired and have plenty of time on my hands) should appointed neighborhood warden and I would be in charge of putting condoms on bucks during the upcoming rut.

I’ll stay with that not so old saying, “KILL IT AND GRILL IT”.

It’s my understanding that they taste pretty good.

Oh, they’re a lot better than chicken. Not quite as good a ostrich, though. Ostrich is better than beef.

Invasive exotic species. Kill them just like they do the iguanas.
