Middletown, Connecticut — On Saturday, August 12, 2023 at approximately 6:33 a.m., the Middletown Police Department received a complaint of excessive noise and breaking glass at 195 Liberty Street, Middletown. Detective Karli Travis was working a routine shift in patrol uniform and responded to the call in a marked police cruiser. Detective Travis parked her police cruiser at the intersection of Liberty Street and Park Place and approached the subject premises on foot. Near 195 Liberty Street, Detective Travis was confronted by 52-year-old Winston Tate. Tate was in possession of a hammer.
Tate charged at Detective Travis and knocked her to the ground, hitting her multiple times with the hammer. During this struggle, Detective Travis discharged her firearm multiple times, striking Tate. Tate, wounded, retreated into 195 Liberty Street. Additional Middletown officers arrived and surrounded the premises at 195 Liberty Street. Tate was taken into custody as he exited the basement hatchway. He was treated by medics and transported to Hartford Hospital by ambulance. Tate was released from the hospital late on August 14, 2023. Detective Travis was also injured during the incident. She was taken to Middlesex Hospital and has been treated and released. The judge set Tate’s bond at $850,000. He is due back in court on October 3, 2023.
Why does anyone believe this must be an “either or” kind of thing? If I was a cop I would have no problem purchasing my own weapon and ammo. If I want to carry .357 or .45 it shouldn’t be anyone else’s concern, frankly.
The problem with hide bound government bureaucracy, if one person shits their pants, they make everyone wear diapers. That’s just stupid.
CT is full of truly awful cities but Waterbury is the most depressing of all imho—everything is falling apart and nobody is dumb enough to spend their money to fix anything.
He seems to have gotten away did he?
“Was his name “Maxwell” by any chance?”
Probably not because she lived.
If it was Max, he needs range time.
I carry a 5” Kimber 1911 .45cal ACP “Target Eclipse II”, w/ 230gr HPs. But you’re right: shot placement is primary concern.
You summed up Middletown perfectly.
I grew up in nearby East Hampton in the 60s. The best thing about Middletown always was the Sicilian Community. The Sons of Italy and the Garabaldis. Great food, great restaurants, and great pizza! Along with the cultural dances and concerts. Those are my best memories of Middletown.
My biggest problem with my Tokarev is over-penetration. That little 7.62 goes through EVERYTHING.
And I didn’t even bring up Bridgeport!
Yup. Over penetration should be a big concern for everyone the braggadocious .357 and 10mm boys never think about how many innocents will be affected if the are behind the targeted perp.
Nice gun. A hit with a .22 is more effective than a miss with a 10mm.
Throw in the best way to season a cast iron skillet and Ginger Vs Mary Anne and you got it.
don’t forget about New Britain
It’s the government after all. Do it one way or else. Some smaller police departments or sheriff’s offices are more open to officers choosing their own weapons. Most large departments insist on one weapon for everyone, though detectives or special duty officers are usually exceptions.
For one thing, the departments provide ammunition for training. They want standardization. There is a practical reason, too. If one officer runs out of ammunition and another officer has an extra magazine, standardization is great. Same if one officer has to use another’s gun, it works the same as what they are trained on.
My godparents live in New Britain on Eldridge drive. It actually has some nice sections.
Over penetration is one thing that the newer design ammunition can deal with.
My question to handgun hunters, would you use 9mm for a dangerous predator that weighed 350-400 lbs ?
You couldn’t be more correct! I practice that whenever I can . Somebody told her she could be a cop and it nearly cost her life. The moment I see that hammer, I’m lining-up my sights! “Would you please put that down” is not a winning strategy. She should just count her blessing anf find a new job!
Oh ya?
I carry a 6” Kimber 1912 .46cal ACP “Target Eclipse III” , w/231gr HPs.
Were I actually TARGETTING the predator you posited, I would use a larger caliber than my 7.62. That said, I don’t ever hunt predators, especially with a handgun. My little guy is more than adequate to my purpose, so I suppose the answer is YES, I WOULD, if I had to. However, there is a reason I hunt with a rifle, not a handgun...
How about you, “Rev”? How would YOU deal with a surprise situation?
You use the tools you have, because wishing for a better tool just gets you dead. Quickly.
