It seems to be what the Left and the deep-state want from public schooling - pliant citizens. Blacks and immigrants already seem to be bagged, tagged and in the truck.

Simple math textbooks from the 1940s and earlier are solid ways to teach all of the basics. No nonsense stuff. Those books taught all the basic operations and also taught practical skills regarding business profits, bank loans, investing, handling money, making a budget. All you need.
The education establishment made a conscious choice to move away from such subject matter and instead focus on Set Theory, Matrices, and other silly stuff that led us to Common Core.
We were at a Big Lots last evening to buy a bag of cat food.
The cashier could not make change for a $5.83 bag of cat food from a $10 bill because he didn’t know how unless the computer told him...................

A few weeks ago we were in a new seafood restaurant in our area. The female server was maybe 20 and told us the special that day was oysters on the half shell for 75 cents each.
Just to clarify I said “so a dozen is nine dollars right?”
Her reply?........”um....I’m just a server, I don’t do math”.........WHAT??!!
Hilarity would have ensued.

Me and math were never friends.
The math whiz in the family is my sister who laughs and burns through algebra, calc, trigonometry.
Another really good way to confuse many cashiers is to give them a $10 and a $1 for a $5.83 purchase when you’d rather have a $5 in your wallet than four more $1 bills. When they try to hand the $1 back, I just tell them to let the machine figure it out.
Should have handed over $11.08.....
