Inmates inside the prison where disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried is to be held during his trial have previously been stuck in freezing cells with limited power for a week.
The Metropolitan Detention Center houses more than 1,600 inmates and is situated near the waterfront in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
As well as new inmate Bankman-Fried, the prison had previously held high profile individuals including R. Kelly, Ghislaine Maxwell and Martin Shkreli.
Other inmates have been linked to high-profile drug trafficking and terrorism cases, while others are comparatively anonymous New Yorkers awaiting trial.
In 2019, the prison made headlines after inmates suffered days without heat or power during a cold snap.
In February 2019, a fire cut off power and heat to parts of the jail and inmates had to suffer in near freezing temperatures and in darkness after the sun went down.
Inmates inside the jail at the time included Nxivm sex-cult leader Keith Raniere and accused jewelry thief mastermind Damir Pejcinovic, as well as MS-13 gang members and mafiosos.
At the time, Deirdre von Dornum, who oversees the Federal Defenders' Brooklyn team said that inmates had wrapped themselves 'head to toe in towels and blankets'.
The crisis came to a head with protesters rallying outside the facility, where inmates banged on the walls of the jail and flashed nightlights in a plea for help.
It's latest inmate, disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried was sent to the prison on Friday after having his $250 million bail revoked.
Bankman-Fried's lawyers earlier insisted he shouldn't be jailed and argued that he was trying to protect his reputation.
He is facing a slew of criminal charges related to the collapse of his cryptocurrency exchange FTX in November.
He allegedly misused billions of dollars from investors on lavish gifts and political donations...
