Throughout the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, one of the biggest and loudest storylines surrounding the United States Women’s National Team had nothing to do with soccer, but whether or not some players on the team sang the national anthem before the matches. But despite the consistent media discourse, there was very little actual conversation about this controversy from those covering the event or the USWNT themselves. And it sounds like that was an intentional decision.
United States Women’s National Team beat writer Meg Linehan of The Athletic, revealed that the lack of coverage regarding the national anthem controversy was no accident. The reporters on the ground covering the team actively chose to ignore the national anthem discourse sweeping across the mainstream media in the United States.

Just stop and contemplate that sentence for a moment and tell me about "journalism" in America.
Dont care
Feminist rationalization word salad.
Journalists in America suck.
A “writer”. Don’t give a rip.
…but are diverse.
Now, if one of the girls accidentally got her shoe tangled in a PRIDE rainbow flag that was lying near the warm up bench, and this girls was filmed kicking it off her shoe, then running into the game, all the reporters would have jumped onto that ‘non-story’.
If one of the players had called another a gay slang name, that is all that would have been discussed.
The womens team is dead to me. So they can discuss this or not, I am never watching again. I don’t care if they win or lose.
I think you could count the number of American Journalists on one hand. The rest are a bunch of spoiled, dumb as a rock, brats who could get a job at Taco Bell to save their lives.
The Athletic is owned by the New York Times. All you need to know.
For me, missing the goal on a penalty kick, twice in a row, is worse than standing mute during the National Anthem.
Maybe she was auditioning to be the Cowboys placekicker.
Because the controversy exists on a few sites and nowhere else. 3 players on the team didn’t put their hands over their hearts. This is far from controversial when compared to other athletes in other games.
There is literally no there, there.
It’s more the overall body of work over the past 4 years, and Rapinoe’s past history.
I ignored the lesbo team until they got beat
They’re a rotten bunch... most everyone can see it, here and abroad
So it's all about politics. The coach wasn't allowed to do his job.
The Yankees are known for their rule, players must have their hair cut above the collar of their baseball jersey and no beards are permitted.
It's all about the team.
Yeah, back when it was owned by Jamie Newberg it was worthwhile. Not now, though I am happy Jamie got his money.
