I think it will be one of the things.

It is possible to support overturning Roe AND trusting the states will promote the will of their citizens.

But there are many who will die on this hill. And they will take the rest of the party with it.

Trump alone would motivate the Dems to action. Local debates on abortion will motivate more.

No Trump. Compromise on abortion.

Yes!!! Exactly! It's both the right call and the winning move. Roe was justly overturned, not because every single supporter of it was a liar (which is the case), but because we are a nation of laws, and Roe was absurdly, explicitly, black-and-white unconstitutional.

Abortion is not mentioned in the Constitution. Therefore, like laws against other forms of murder, the matter is left "to the States, respectively, or to the People."

That Federalist position, besides being correct legally, is the only possible game-winner nationally. Most conservatives would not vote for a pro-abort of either party. Most Democrats--except for Hispanic and rural Democrats--would, so to speak, rather die than vote for a pro-life candidate.

The rightful position any Federal candidate should take is that abortion laws, like laws against robbery or double-parking or the murder of an adult, are a matter for the States. And if you don't like your state's laws--whatever they are--on this or any other matter, campaign to change them. It's your right. But it's not the job of Uncle Sam to tell the whole country what to think about everything. He's only allowed to decide on the matters given to him by the States who came together and created America.
