The state of New Hampshire has been sued after officials removed a historical marker commemorating the birthplace of a communist and labor leader - just weeks after it was installed.
The state's Department of Natural and Cultural Resources unveiled a green aluminum sign, bearing the New Hampshire state seal, on May 1 recognizing former Community Party USA head Elizabeth Gurley Flynn as a 'nationally-known labor leader, civil libertarian and feminist organizer.'
But the sign was removed just two weeks later at the direction of Republican Gov. Chris Sununu, who has said the 'anti-American sign' will not be put back on his watch, according to the Concord Monitor.
Retired history professor Mary Lee Sargent and longtime progressive activist Arnold Alpert are now suing the state officials who oversaw its removal, and are asking a court to order the state to reinstall the sign.
They are being represented pro bono by Adru H. Volinsky, a Democrat who ran for governor in 2020.
According to the lawsuit, which was filed Monday in Merrimack County Superior Court, New Hampshire state officials violated the Administrative Procedures Act when they updated the policy and guidelines that govern the state's historical highway marker program.
The policy was revised on May 12, and the marker was removed just three days later.
But in 1953, Flynn was convicted under the Alien Registration Act on charges she had conspired to advocate the forcible overthrow of the US government - which she denied.
She served two years in federal prison, after which she continued to be an active member of the Communist Party USA - even becoming its president in 1961.
Flynn died while visiting the USSR in 1964 and received a state funeral in Moscow's Red Square.

With all the monuments of respected people that have been torn down by Maoists it’s only fair play to turn the tables.
NH is under no obligation to keep up a monument which they put up.
They can change their minds.
Yet the alleged libertarians who want limited government try to use the government to force their own wishes on others.
If they want a monument up, they can make their own and put it on their own private property.
May she burn forever!
My thoughts exactly!
Exactly, hear hear.
the monument is offensive. therfore, according to their own directives must be removed and at most placed in a museum in order to learn from our mistakes, never again to be repeated.
did I get that about right?
Anyone honored by Moscow Reds is by definition a American traitor. No reason such a person should be recognized at taxpayers’ expense.
Rare W from an otherwise useless governor
perhaps the marker has already been lost in a tragic boating accident.
or at least, one can always hope...
Well, LW Democrats are well known communists so....They should all fly to Russia and join the military to attack Ukraine
Just his presence in office is a continuous win as will probably become obvious when he’s replaced by a dem in the next election.
Unlike the millions of Confederate soldiers, this commie bit#h was tried and convicted as a traitor to the United States and still gave aid and comfort to the enemy after her conviction.
Tear the statue down!
Except for the double standard they impose on others that allows them everything they want but does not give other’s that privilege. Stuff they want is allowed or mandated. Stuff they don’t want isn’t.
It’s a *heads I win, tails you lose* situation.
Whaddya know! That buffoon Sununu actually did something worthwhile.
