The title refers to "silent running",
a submarine stealth tactic.
The story describes World War II submarine
warfare in the
Pacific Ocean,
and deals with themes of vengeance, endurance, courage, loyalty,
and honor and how these can be tested
during wartime.
In addition to Gable and Lancaster playing the leads, the film also features Jack Warden and was the film debut of Don Rickles.

Perfect timing. I was literally just debating what to watch on a relaxing Saturday morning.

Most excellent. Thanks for posting!

It was a very good book, too, as were all of the books written by Edward Beach. He knew the subject matter from experience.

Agree. I highly recommend all of his books.
I found ‘Dust on the Sea’ in Jr High and hunted down ‘Run Silent, Run Deep’ immediately after. Great writing that stands the test of time. I was so excited when ‘Cold is the sea’ came out - and not disappointed.
I usually prefer books over movies but enjoyed ‘Run silent, run deep’ as a WW2 Pacific war submarine movie.
As I recall Mr Beach did not care for Hollywood’s version of his book.

Great movie. Lancaster vs Gable. And a small appearance by Don Rickles.

I was exactly the same - found “Dust on the Sea” first, as a kid, and chased down “Run Silent, Run Deep”.

Both would make superb summer reading assignments in high school I think, along with Dodson, “Away All Boats”. Vastly better than the @#%%£ they assign these days.

At the Manila Army&Navy Club library.

I only own a copy of Run Silent, Run Deep at the moment. I might have to buy Dust and Cold soon.

This thread calls for Iron's Up!

Running silent, running deep, we are your final prayer
Warriors in secret sleep, a merchantman's nightmare
A silent death lies awaiting, for all of you below
Running silent, running deep, sink into your silent sleep

"Balance of Terror" on the original Star Trek is the same thing, only in space.

Of course Spock setting off a buzzer and another space ship able to hear it is stupid. But still a great episode.
