DeSantis says Trump can't win in a general election: 'Those are just the realities'
Fox News ^ | July 31, 2023 | Ashley Carnahan

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sat down with "Special Report" on Monday for a wide-ranging interview, offering insight into whether former President Donald Trump can win in a general election.

DeSantis said he doesn’t believe Trump can win in 2024 because there are "too many voters who just aren't going to vote for him going forward."

"I saw it in Florida in my re-election. You know, I won the first time by less than a percent, second time by ‘20. Why did people vote against me in ‘18 but then voted for me in ‘22? The number one reason they gave was because of Trump."

"Because in ‘18 they said that they were voting against Trump. Voting against me, to vote against Trump, even though they didn't know much about me," he said. The Florida governor handily won re-election in November 2022, defeating Democratic candidate Charlie Christ by nearly 20 points.

DeSantis also told host Bret Baier that Trump can’t win crucial states like Georgia and Arizona in a general election.

"The polls that come out… I beat Biden in Georgia. Trump doesn't. I beat Biden soundly in Arizona. Trump doesn't. Those are just the realities," he said.

"And I also think in terms of the base, you need to have a cadre of personnel. If you want to slay this administrative state, you've got to be disciplined, you've got to be focused, and you've got to have people surrounding you that are going to go and support the mission. I think the former president would have a very difficult time getting the type of personnel to join the administration that you would need to actually bring this stuff to fruition," he continued.

DeSantis is right.

He might be right - which is why I've been willing to consider DeSantis and other alternatives. Depends on which candidate is prepared to take ballot-harvesting seriously and mount serious ballot-harvesting efforts in states where it is legal. Trump certainly has the money to fund his own ballot-harvesting mechanisms, but Trump also gets hated in a way that no other candidate does. Independents who might vote for another Republican may not vote for Trump. Women who might vote for another Republican may not vote for Trump. People who normally would not vote at all will turn out to vote against Trump. We will see.

And DeSantis can’t even win the primary of the state he is the sitting Governor of, and that’s the realities....

The idea DeSantis can win a national election is laughable.

He’s set himself up to be a joke, and took himself from being the most likely frontrunner in 2028 to being someone who will never ever be able to win a national election. The humiliation he’s about to endure is going to be huge, and it was completely avoidable.

Even Kasich as a former governor could carry his home state in 16... DeSantis as a sitting governor will not even carry FL in the primaries.

There is a fundamental reality that needs to be understood.

The MAGA folks, which are not only Republicans, but also Independents — under no circumstances will vote for any Republican other than Trump.

That’s just the way it is. We don’t care about defeating Biden if it is not a Drain the Swamp candidate doing it. If the nominee is GOPe, then we will vote Biden. The GOP establishment has to be wiped out. Voting Dem is no big step, especially for Independents.

It doesn’t matter if Biden is re-elected because issues do not matter. Only the Swamp matters.

This is not startling. It’s not even surprising. The Independents who voted Trump in 2016 did not vote Republican. They voted Drain the Swamp — and understand this carefully — they voted for Obama in 2012. They don’t care about issues or party. They care about the Swamp.

If you want Biden out, you have only one way to vote. If you hate Trump then you’re one of the 10% GOPe and don’t belong on FR.

According to current polls, Trump is stronger now than in 2020, so DeSantis is just making a guess. Also, DeSantis became the nominee, what happens when Democrats aim their fire at him? No, I think it’s time for a Trump v. Biden re-match. Give it a chance. Let’s Go Brandon.

Exactly right. And if Trump wins, it’s game time.

It’s not that I disagree with you per se, but unless we get ahead of VBM, vote by mail, a month for them to vote or harvest votes and we (mainly) vote on Election Day, it does not matter who is on top of the tix.

We lose

If President Trump is able to win his legal battles before the convention, he will telegraph to the American people that he has been treated unfairly with all those bogus indictments. Americans will see him as the ultimate victim against the Deep State. If they elect him he will destroy the Deep State, which is the real enemy of America.

Who people support now in over the next year he’s very different than who they will support in a year and a half at the national election.

Sorry, but WRONG..

Desantis has polled below Trump against Biden since March...

Desantis is a non starter/never was. Dumbest campaign messaging ever..

“Hey, I’m just like that guy you really want and like, but somehow, I’m better, so vote for me.”

Absolutely stupidest messaging I’ve ever seen.

But don’t take my word for it, go see for yourself... DeSantis being more “electable” than Trump is a flat out lie.. he hasn’t polled better against Biden since March... Trump has outperformed him for months... The only argument he has, has fallen apart.

Desantis won’t even win the Primary in his home state as the sitting governor, but he can do better in a national race? Not a chance in hell...

The electability argument is just the same old same old establishment playbook... when all else fails say the other person is “unelectable” to scare folks back on the plantation.

Problem is that Trump wants revenge. The base who follows Trump wants revenge too.

And those that blow it off and suggest we move along are THE problem. Those who aren't angry, who don't want to make these people pay for their lies, crimes, and what they've done to this country, are clearly the problem. You sound like one of them. There should be lines of these people being charged, arrested and prosecuted with vengeance.

Is there any evidence that a republican can win the general? Any?

The GOP made their bed by supporting multiple amnesties and not slowing legal/illegal immigration. As of now, it's just politicians fighting over the remaining scraps of the republic.

Or maybe, he was just talking over your head, and you didn't realize it.

Did you even read the quotes in the parent article? I'm assuming you certainly haven't seen the video of the interview.

Because the point DeSantis is making, that you're not addressing, is that NATIONAL polls do not matter, in a Presidential race.

It's what happens in each individual state, not what happens nationally.

For example, Trump would have lost to Hillary in 2016 had NATIONAL results been what counted.

State results are what count, as that's how the electoral college works. And, in these swing states like Georgia and Arizona, that Trump lost in 2020, which thereby cost him the election, DeSantis is scoring significantly higher than Trump in those same states now.

Will that message, and actual explanation of how election works win DeSantis the overall election? Maybe, or maybe not. Most Trump supporters seem happy in their little bubble of national polls. But state elections are how Presidents are selected.

So making sure that every bit of the crap that has happened to Trump, and to the patriotic people of this country these past 8 years, and making sure it never, ever, happens again, is revenge?

OTOH, desantis wouldn’t have won his first election as governor without Trump’s endorsement ...
