When the question is “What’s s snake doing there?” the answer is usually “It’s a rat snake.”
One week ago I saw a black rat snake in the shrubs capture a chipmunk, constrict itself around the chipmunk till it was dead or nearly dead, and then open its mouth wide and swallow it. Pretty gross, but I actually watched for a minute here and there. I didn’t see the whole thing; I was late to leave for an appointment because I was distracted.
