A guy who was in his apartment shot and killed another guy in the neighboring apartment. The shooter says it was an accident. I say there's no such thing as an "accidental" shooting. This was negligence. 90 days is way too short. How about nitrogen asphyxiation?

“bullet hit Austin’s left arm and traveled through his chest, lungs, and all the way to his right arm”
Wow, what are the odds?
The shooter should be behind bars for many years.

Stupid should hurt. If his story checks out, that he’s just a novice with guns, then still... Involuntary manslaughter 10 years

Where’s the ATF? Mere possession of one of those switches carries a five year prison sentence in a Federal penitentiary.

There ARE people who should not be permitted to be anywhere near a firearm. They think they know it all, have no desire to learn how the weapon operates, no desire to take a safety and marksmanship class from a professional firearms instructor. Every member of our gun club is a NRA-Certified Range Safety Officer. The stuff I see at public ranges is scary. Typically a buncha yahoos in “tactical” came dress trying to impress their girlfriends or old guys who think they know it all, but refer to pistol magazines as “clips.”

Interesting sentence. Nine days each on victim’s birthday and on date of shooting for five years.

New meaning to "firewalls" in multi-unit housing. Last century a masonry wall was required between units. I think now all you need is 5/8" drywall and 2×4 draft stop blocks between studs. If they are deeded homes like condos or townhouses, they also require masonry adjoining walls.
Apartments these days you can just punch thru.

Who assembles an unfamiliar gun while it's loaded?
I really believe it was an accident, but it was caused by gross stupidity and carelessness. Yeah, he should do major time, but not a death sentence.

Probably don’t want to visit Ft Worth, or Austin, or Houston, or Dallas...they don’t have prosecutors familiar with the law and generally just wing it.

Agreed. I'm a Second Amendment absolutist. I also firmly believe that if you discharge your weapon, you're answerable for the outcome - "accidents" don't let you off the hook for an unjustified shooting.

I am not very familiar with guns And therein lies the problem. All children should receive firearms training. My father taught me how to handle guns when I was 5 years old, and in the 60 years since then I have never shot anyone.
Learning to handle a gun is not hard. There is one overriding rule you have to learn and every other rule flows from it: Every gun is loaded.
The three main corollaries from that rule are:
1. Always keep your gun pointed in a safe direction, i.e., never point your gun at anything you do not intend to kill or destroy.
2. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
3. Always be sure of your target AND what is behind it.
Every accidental gun shooting arises from the violation of at least one of these rules.
