Depends on where— if joining the bears in the woods, beware of the bears— heh. Not san fran sidewalks.. per se, where they have a website of the “fecal stacks” graphics of areas of the city to... avoid.

Reverse engineering we are importing these savages, to do what work, one wonders.

“why can’t we bring back rail in America?”

The Democrats would love to take away your car, make air travel unaffordable for you, and leave you dependent on rail for transportation.

We can't "bring back rail in America" because it's economic nonsense.

I have an old man's bladder. Sitting on the ground on an airplane when being asked to remain seated, I asked the stewardess if I could use the bathroom.

She paused and said “We're supposed to tell you that you can't do that.” I nodded, got out of my seat and used the bathroom.

The air marshals were NOT waiting for me at the end of the flight.

The woman said that the stewards would not allow her to use the laboratory for 2 hours. I have the impression that the plane was on the ground with the passengers on it for 2 hours.

Yeah, I'm not going to fault the woman here or make a bunch of third worlders jokes. I'm sure she was humiliated.

The airlines are absolutely tyrannical when it comes to this. I recently flew across the country. The second leg of my flight was a short 35 minutes from Philly to Norfolk where the plane sat on the tarmac for 90 minutes waiting for weather to clear at our destination. During that time nobody was allowed to leave their seats. And when we arrived, it was another 20 minutes waiting for our gate to open up.

I've flown enough to know to always use the restroom right before boarding and not to sit in the restaurant downing a bunch of beers before my flight.

After that...about five folks around me started to discuss their past year....all were in some regional prison and this was their first day of freedom.

LOL

Many moons ago I used to ride a bus to and from college. Smoking was still legal on transportation at the time. One of the stops was at a state prison. After my first ride on the route, I came to the conclusion it was wise to have a couple extra packs of smokes on my person.

That's what everyone's, unstudied, knee-jerk response is. What was true in 1970 isn't necessarily true today - especially with the condition of air-travel now.

I'm also NOT talking about government-run rail either.

No one really knows the answer to that question.

Let's try think outside the box a little, and not merely shout-out our conditioned political reflexes

...it is so far behind schedule that it has yet to lay a single mile of track, despite 14 years of work and about $5bn spent."

Have you ridden Amtrak? It is awful. I agree with you but we need to have European level trains.

I am not talking government trains.

The tracks and rights-of-way are already there. Let's think outside the box a little bit

Anybody remember the Grey Rabbit buses? For a while they’d take you from San Francisco to New York faster than Greyhound and for about half the money. I never rode one, but my oldest brother drove a couple of transcontinental trips around 1973 or 1974, until he found out that they didn’t carry any insurance whatsoever.

US Rail is hyper-regulated and is a quasi-communist system. Rail was the first target of "trust-busters," progressives, and unions in the 19th century, and it carries the burden of a century of government interference.

Passenger rail was handed over the US Government to keep the freight lines afloat in the 1970s. Besides rights-of-way owned by Amtrak on the NE Seaboard, freight lines own the track and rights-of-way nearly everywhere else. So of course, a bloated, Fed.gov-operated entity running on other's tracks, in a highly-regulated business, is going to suck.

The economics of rail freight have completely turned around in the last 20 years. Warren Buffett saw the competitive advantage early and bought several rail companies. They are cash cows for him.

The question is - can the laws and regulations be changed/eliminated, to allow private companies to again run passenger trains? I too am skeptical our woke, neo-marxist, regulatory regime in Washington DC would ever willingly give up its power - but as I said - no one has even looked at it in 50 years.

"In some cultures that may be considered perfectly normal."

When my brother was stationed in Vietnam in '66-'67, he wrote home that the people there just squat along the side of the road to take a crap...and I'm sure not much has changed there since then.

Haven’t taken a long-haul trip on Amtrak, but regularly take it from Salem, OR to Seattle and back. Much better than dealing with I-5 traffic at my advanced age.
