Counteroffensive is behind schedule, but is going according to plan – Ukraine’s Defence Minister

Counteroffensive is behind schedule, but is going according to plan – Ukraine’s Defence Minister

Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov has said that the Ukrainian offensive is behind schedule, but is going according to plan.

SOURCE: Reznikov in an interview with CNN

DETAILS: As CNN reported, Reznikov admitted that the offensive was behind schedule, but pointed out that he was “not worried” because it was going according to plan. Reznikov believes that it is a mistake to think that “every counteroffensive should be quick”.

He listed several reasons why the counteroffensive might be slower than expected: ammunition, artillery shells and artillery systems.

QUOTE: “It’s a question of air defense. It’s a question that we have a very long battlefield line also. And we have against us a big quantity of enemies. So it’s war, it’s not a computer game.”

MORE DETAILS: Ukrainian generals and commanders see the real situation on the battlefield, Reznikov stressed, adding that “the main value for us is the life of…our soldiers”.

Reznikov said the situation on the southern front in Ukraine had been slowed down to a large extent by minefields set up by Russian troops. Ukrainian troops were forced to manually clear paths through the fields.

QUOTE: “We need to use our soldiers, sappers and deminers very slowly, and very slowly preparing the corridors for the real offensive movement.”

MORE DETAILS: Reznikov added that such activity in different locations will confuse the Russians about the main direction Ukraine will take.

“It’s like Picket’s Charge taking place over weeks instead of minutes.”
Interesting comparison. However, Russia maybe playing the role of Pickett. The Russian POW’S surrender because they perceive that to be the case.

I could choose a different image hosting site, one that is more common here on FR, one that you could see, but to be honest I am indifferent to your inability to view them.

You were able to see images I posted several months back, I know this because you commented on them. Evidently in the interim your son over-corrected. I am an ancient computer scientist, I am so old I use to scratch 1’s and 0’s onto bare metal. I could solve your problem from my end but I chose not to.

Moreover I think it is an appropriate metaphor, illustrative of your views about this conflict in Ukraine… that you can’t see what everyone else can.

INTERESTING TIDBIT:

Ukrainska Pravda
January 24, 2023·2 min read
In this article:
Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief inherits US$1 million and donates it to Ukrainian army:

Valerii Zaluzhnyi
Ukrainian general

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, inherited US$1 million from a Ukrainian American in the United States. In turn, he donated all the money to the Ukrainian army.

DETAILS: The publication reports that Zaluzhnyi received an inheritance from an American of Ukrainian origin, Hryhorii Stepanets. This was reported by the Stepanets family.

In January, the general donated the entire amount to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The military’s press service confirmed the donation.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) confirmed this information, in response to Ukrainska Pravda’s request.

Indeed, Stepanets left Zaluzhnyi an inheritance of US$1 million.

QUOTE from AFU: “General Zaluzhnyi transferred the full amount to the special account at the National Bank of Ukraine dedicated to the Ukrainian Army. SWIFT transaction details from the bank on 5 January 2023 confirmed this.

QUOTE from Zaluzhnyi: “I gave my whole life to the Armed Forces. And I did not have a single doubt about what to do with the inheritance. Mr. Hryhorii’s last will was obviously to support the Ukrainian army through me. I am grateful to everyone who helps the Armed Forces of Ukraine. And I am grateful to my family for their understanding.”

BIOGRAPHY OF STEPANETS FOR REFERENCE:

Stepanets was born in 1938 in the Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia. His father fought in World War II and was killed by the Germans in October 1941. Hryhorii and his mother were evacuated to the Urals, where they suffered from hunger and other hardships. Following the end of the war, they returned to Vinnytsia.

There was also very little food in the city at that time. They survived only thanks to their uncle who had fought in the war (he had been wounded and had lost a leg), who shared his military rations with them.

Stepanets graduated from a middle school and joined the Moscow State University named after Mikhail Lomonosov in 1956; he graduated with a masters degree in Mathematics and Chemistry, as well as a PhD in Physical Chemistry. He was fluent in Ukrainian, Russian, German, Italian and English.

While working at the Geophysical Research and Development Institute in Moscow, he signed a letter in support of anti-Soviet dissidents; soon after that, the Soviet government dismissed him on trumped-up charges. Later, the KGB prosecuted him, and he could no longer get a job. He filed an application for a visa, but they rejected it.

The situation changed when Gorbachev came to power, and Stepanets was granted the right to leave the Soviet Union. In 1989, he arrived in the USA and started working for Microsoft in Redmond, Washington, working as a software developer. Together with another software developer, he invented a patent for decoding the variable-length data codes; the patent was handed over to Microsoft.

Blinken and Romania’s Foreign Minister discuss grain export from Ukraine
European Pravda
Tetiana Lozovenko
Monday, 24 July 2023, 23:29

Antony Blinken, United States Secretary of State, and Luminita Odobescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, discussed the issue of food security due to Russia’s shelling of Ukrainian ports during a telephone conversation on Monday.

SOURCE: Blinken and Odobescu on Twitter

DETAILS: The Romanian Foreign Minister said the conversation with the American counterpart concerned the strengthening of the strategic partnership of both countries, the security of the Black Sea region and the support of the export potential of grain from Ukraine: “We agreed to maintain close coordination and support for Ukraine and Moldova.”

Blinken, in turn, noted that he and his Romanian counterpart discussed joint support for Ukraine and global food security, as well as bilateral relations and security issues in the Black Sea.

BACKGROUND:

-On 17 July, Russia announced the suspension of the “grain deal” and threatened “risks” to the parties who decide to continue the initiative without the participation of the Russian Federation. In addition, Moscow began massive shelling of the port infrastructure of Odesa and the Danube ports.

-In particular, on the night of 23-24 July, the Russian military launched another attack on the Odesa Oblast. The Ukrainian military states that the target of the attack was the port infrastructure of the Danube. A hangar with grain was destroyed due to the strikes, and tanks for storing other cargo were damaged.

-Against this background, Gabrielius Landsbergis, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, called for more active assistance for Ukraine.

Russians are preparing a “false flag operation” in Black Sea - US State Department
Censor.NET
24.07.23 22:29
https://censor.net/en/n3433193

The Kremlin is likely preparing a false flag operation in the Black Sea amid Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s port infrastructure.

This was stated by US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, reports Censor.NЕТ with reference to Ukrinform.

“We have information that suggests that they (the Russian Federation - Ed.) are apparently preparing a false flag operation. They have threatened vessels operating in international waters, which led to the attack on the Danube today,” he said.

According to the spokesman, the United States will continue to consult with partners in the region on alternative ways to export grain from Ukraine.

Miller added that there is no ideal solution that would allow Ukraine to ship the same amount of grain as during the Black Sea Grain Initiative without restoring sea routes.

One of the fun thing about English is there are so many ways you can reuse simple words, like naked. It becomes very funny when the word makes you picture a naked blogger working hard in his basement. also, you can even have fun imaging what is actually hard. Having studied several languages, I can tell you understanding humor in a different language is the last thing most people learn.

My Latina friend and her brother had hysterics listening to the small mistakes my husband made when learning Spanish. For example the radical changing verb poder (to be able), becomes puedo when you say I can. He kept saying no pedo (meaning I can’t) which would come from the verb peder, which I am told means to pass intestinal gas. He kept calling jugo de naranja (orange juice), jugo de arana, for which I cannot figure out how to type with the little zigzag above the n which makes it sound like ny, translated it means spider juice, etc.

ISW explains why Putin wrote article about Russia’s withdrawal from grain initiative
Ukrainska Pravda
Tuesday, 25 July 2023
https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/07/25/7412752/

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has said that Vladimir Putin is trying to mitigate the damage caused to Russia’s position in Africa and his own reputation after Russia’s withdrawal from the grain initiative, attacks on Ukrainian grain and port facilities, and his inability to personally participate in the BRICS Summit due to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. It is for this reason that he published an article on 24 July explaining Russian withdrawal from the grain initiative.

SOURCE: ISW

DETAILS:
ISW said that Putin outlined in his article Russia’s goals connected with establishing partner relations with Africa and urged them to continue “traditionally close cooperation on the world stage”.

ISW noted that Putin also emphasised the importance of “uninterrupted food supply” for “maintenance of the political stability of African states”, accusing the collective West of using the grain initiative for their own financial benefits.

QUOTE from ISW:

“Putin’s article follows Russia’s withdrawal from the grain deal and attacks that have destroyed tens of thousands of tons of Ukrainian grain and Ukrainian facilities essential to transporting the grain to areas of Africa that rely heavily on Ukrainian grain.

Putin is also likely attempting to mitigate the opportunity cost and embarrassment of his inability to personally attend the BRICS Summit in South Africa due to the ICC arrest warrant.”
