Cleveland Browns wide receiver Marquise Goodwin will miss the start of NFL training camp due to "alarming" blood clots in his legs and lungs, the team revealed on Friday.
Goodwin began experiencing discomfort in his legs and slight shortness of breath during organized team activities in the spring. Follow-up tests revealed the 32-year-old athlete had been suffering from blood clots in his legs and lungs.

Deion Sanders has had recent problems with blood clots in his legs. He had clots removed in his left leg last month, and just had new surgery to remove one in his right. The older procedure was for a blood clot in his left thigh and another in the same leg below his knee. Sanders had surgery back in 2021 for a dislocated toe that hadn’t been treated for 20 years. They ended up amputating two of his toes. They claim the clots are as a result of that surgery, but the new clot was in the leg that wasn’t previously operated on.
When I started my career as a Correctional Officer for NY State back in 1980, the first thing they told us was that the only stupid question, was the one you didn't ask.

Athletes of every sport and every age may experience a blood clot. Some reasons athletes are at risk for blood clots include:
Spending a lot of time seated and immobile while traveling long distances in a car or plane to and from sporting events
Experiencing dehydration due to strenuous activity
Having a higher likelihood of experiencing a trauma such as a broken bone or internal tissue injury like deep bruising (hematoma)
As with the general public, some athletes are more vulnerable to DVTs because they have:
An inherited clotting disorder
A family history of DVTs
Abnormal anatomy of veins or other body structures (for example, narrowing of the veins of the pelvis or shoulder)
Another possible reason is the use of intravenous introductions in the body. Many athletes are treated for dehydration with this method of treatment. Many athletes also opt for IV therapy for joint pain if they experience pain or injuries due to overuse or strain. And IV is faster and more efficient for medication introduction.
So this isn’t unusual with athletes depending upon the sport they perform and based upon the trauma to the body they receive.
