The 1975 frontman Matty Healy had some choice words for the Malaysian government pertaining to its extreme anti-LGBTQ laws while performing in the country’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur, on July 21.
“I made a mistake. When we were booking shows, I wasn’t looking into it. I don’t see the xxxx point… of inviting the 1975 to a country and then telling us who we can have sex with,” Healy said before cutting the concert, a headlining slot at Good Vibes Festival, short. “I’m sorry if that offends you, and you’re religious… but your government are a bunch of xxxx r——. I don’t care anymore. If you push, I’m gonna push back. I’m not in the xxxx mood.”
Tony Bennett Remembered by Barack Obama, Elton John, David Letterman, Harry Connick Jr. and More: ‘He’s Irreplaceable’ Wielding a bottle of wine, Healy then addressed the audience directly: “Unfortunately, you don’t get a set of loads of uplifting songs because I’m xxxxfurious. And that’s not fair on you, because you’re not representative of your government. You are young people, and I’m sure a lot of you are gay and progressive.”
The singer added that the 1975 considered dropping out of the show due to Malaysia’s anti-gay laws. “I pulled this show yesterday, and we had a conversation,” Healy said. “We said, ‘You know what? We can’t let the kids down because they’re not the government… If you want to invite me here to do a show, you can xxxx off. I’ll take your money, you can ban me, but I’ve done this before, and it doesn’t feel good.”
The 1975 bassist Ross MacDonald then walked over to Healy and the two engaged in a prolonged kiss on the mouth, in protest to Malaysia’s anti-gay legislation. Being LGBTQ in the country is illegal, with laws strictly enforced and queer people frequently subject to hate crimes.
Before exiting the stage, Healy said to the crowd, “Alright, we gotta go. We just got banned from Kuala Lumpur, I’ll see you later.” The band is next set to perform in Jakarta, Indonesia, at We the Fest.
While the 1975 has yet to release an official statement, a source close to the band tells Variety, “Matty has a long-time record of advocating for the LGBTQ+ community, and the band wanted to stand up for their LGBTQ+ fans and community.”
Healy pulled a similar stunt in Dubai in 2019, kissing a male fan onstage in protest of the United Arab Emirates’ legislative attacks against queer people. Being gay in the UAE can land residents up to 15 years in prison.
After the Dubai gig, Healy wrote on Twitter: “I don’t think we’ll be allowed back [in the UAE] due to my ‘behaviour’ but know that I love you and I wouldn’t have done anything differently given the chance again.”
During the 1975’s recent “At Their Very Best” tour, Healy made a habit of snogging [kissing] various audience (and band) members onstage. The group will return to North America this fall with an extended run of dates in the “Still… At Their Very Best” tour.
I guess this guy needs to virtue signal. because a month or so when he was dating Taylor Swift , and he fans were saying he is terrible for saying/doing various incorrect things.
I can’t quite follow the article but if he plans to flout the rules on sex (or whatever it is) in Malaysia, he won’t be doing much ‘performing’ outside of their prison system. Think ‘Iran’ for reference.
I hope he gets publicly caned.
How about honoring the rules as a visitor to another nation. Practice the pervy in private. They arrogantly need to push the pervy out in public for that ‘in your face’ factor.
And he got busted wearing "Red Scare" podcast merchandise after the Red Scare girls (Anna Khachiyan and Dasha Nekrasova) were banished from the Left for interviewing Alex Jones.
Anyhow, Taylor Swift's handlers told her to ditch this guy so she quickly did.
“Baliff. Whack his pee-pee...”
Yeah, it’s not like it’s Christians he’s giving the finger to in Malaysia.
Muslims are fast to saddle and to ride…
Exactly.
Tay Tay is going to wind up with $750 million or more, and no children.
She’ll be 40, no eggs, and on her 831st boyfriend.
At least she hasn’t got into trouble and there’s no pics of her nude online.
I had to look up the reference…
Caned? He ought to be executed per Sharia law. These thugs need to be made an example of, and if he flouts Islamic law in a Muslim country his life should be forfeit. These woke extremists will only be stopped by the ultimate penalty.
I still can’t figure out why guys haven’t been able to comb/brush their hair for the last couple of decades... (and it usually looks greasy)
I was being nice. This makes me think of that chick in Dubai that decided to yell at some Muslim man. She’s in the pokey.
Research the laws of any foreign country you are visiting.
Lol
“Matty Healy Slams Malaysia’s Anti-LGBTQ Laws, Kisses the 1975 Bassist Onstage in Kuala Lumpur: Stop ‘Telling Us Who We Can Have Sex With’”
Dude thinks he is in California. May wind up in bamboo cage with a lot of really painful wounds on his back.
Matty just won a free flying lesson.
So do I.
The problem is not us telling them who you can have sex with, it’s them telling us who they have sex with.
Constantly.
They went from coming out of the closet to shouting it from the rooftops.
From wanting acceptance to demanding compliance.
Didn’t the Dubai chick or Matty learn anything from “Midnight Express”, assuming they’ve even seen that movie.
Indeed.
