It happened on the 13th in New York City where some group of boys in an area of Manhattan began to go around removing and stomping on the hats factory workers were wearing. It ended up turning into an all out brawl when they moved on from the factory workers to the dock workers’ who immediately fought back. The brawl ended up stopping all traffic on the Manhattan Bridge! Nobody died, but the violent riot did have to be broken up by the police and people were sent to jail (not for long though! Neat article!
100 years ago, gangs of hoodlums were stealing and destroying personal property. Time have changed. Not.
You don’t f___ with dock workers.
Shortly after this, a record entitled the Hard Hat Song by the Hard Hats on the Hard Hat label came out. I have a 45 rpm copy of it in my collection, but it hasn't yet made it to Youtube.

Nice guys, like Joseph Columbo.
Enjoyed that article so much! Once upon a time, New York was full of patriots.
Everyone wore straw hats back then in boater and other styles— who were the gang members who did this, probably 1920’s anarchists whose heroes were Sacco & Vanzetti at some point (people who were just plain robbers of company cash payroll, in the supposed name of world socialism).
Great post, and this was 59 years after the 1863 anti-Union army Draft riots that led to the Union navy ships shelling NYC and veteran troops entering the city and shooting down people in the street. Started as a protest against the $300 substitute fee no everyday person could afford to pay a substitute instead of being drafted. Devolved into Irish recent immigrants vs. blacks about..jobs.
Seems the boaters were uniformly the choice of the Wilsonian effin bee eye.
Another interesting riot in NYC is the flour riot of 1837.
Interesting historical precedent to the NYC Hard Hat Riots of May 1970.
Apparently NYC has this thing with hats!

Who won the Hard Hats or the college hippies?
>> Who won the Hard Hats or the college hippies?
Who had the hard hats on, and who just had “hair down to there”...? ;-)
What about the Zoot Suit Riots?
If a youth HAD to destroy someone’s straw hat, he was supposed to do it near September 15, when the straw had is supposed to be retired anyway.
Boy that took me back to around 1995-1996
[Most of those boys were teenagers between 13-16]
Well, perhaps some of them learned a valuable lesson that day?
