Adapted from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Broadway rock opera, "Jesus Christ Superstar" recounts the last days of Jesus Christ (Ted Neeley) from the perspective of Judas Iscariot (Carl Anderson), his betrayer. As Jesus' following increases, Judas begins to worry that Jesus is falling for his own hype, forgetting the principles of his teachings and growing too close to the prostitute Mary Magdalene (Yvonne Elliman). After Jesus has an outburst in a temple, Judas turns on him

Get some headphones and listen to the brown album with the gold angels design on the cover. It’s a rock masterpiece that transcends what you personally believe. Narrowly lost out to Carole King’s Tapestry for ‘best album’.

I still love the music. I actually was in the orchestra for a local production of
JCS back in the 70s. It was a great time.

It was pretty controversial back then, as I recall. It was called blasphemy by some. I enjoyed every performance we did locally.

In recent years, I have been pretty critical of “All in the Family”, seeing it as Norman Lear’s and Carroll O’Conner’s version of conservatives, but I gotta admit, there was some pretty good writing in that show.

My father was a composer and a conductor - he did a lot of outdoor summer dramas as well as musicals and we always attended multiple showings.

I know the words to all of the songs of Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, Grease, The Boyfriend and so many others - we would sing them in the car going on vacation. Such a happy childhood!!!! ❤️

I usually listen to the concept album each Easter week. I saw the show live in the early 1990s. It was great. During intermission I heard a man explaining the plot to his companion. A co-worker took his teenage daughters. He told me they were asking questions about Jesus. The play or movie could influence some people.

“The LP was great. The movie sucked. This clip shows why.”

Carl Anderson was EONs better than Murray Head.

King Herod’s Song was originally
Try it and See, a B side of a 45 by
Rita Pavone (Italian but sung in
English). Rice and Lloyd-Webber changed thewords; early soundtrack/cast albums
listed it with the subtitle (Try It And See)
Try it and see, won’t you try it with me
You could be so good for me, I could
give you energy..

Agreed .. Yvonne Elliman’s performance was so crystal pure, so heart wrenching, imho.

I never actually saw the play but I remember the music well. As a 9 or 10 year old boy, the soundtrack was on the radio station my mother had on constantly, along with music from Godspell and Hair, also plays I never saw.

All that music brings back pleasant memories of an innocent time.

This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius...
