How were they appointed to that slate? I think this might not end the way they predict.

A slate of electors is appointed for each candidate long before Election Day. I think it's the party leadership that selects the electors.

Technically, Election Day has no official bearing on the real presidential election. Under the U.S. Constitution, the president is elected by electors who convene in the respective state capitals on the day appointed by Congress. For the 2020 election, this date was December 14th.

In every state, the law requires the electors of the winner of the Election Day "popular vote" to be certified as the official electors for the presidential election. But if the Election Day results are still in dispute on this date in any given state, it's pretty much a NECESSITY for the electors of both major party candidates to convene in that state capital and certify themselves as the official electors for the President.
