Some people will do anything for a Disney experience. Knewz.com learned about one family which took an unexpected 17-hour drive.

Nathan Montanez simply planned to drive his wife and two children to an airport. He would stay home in New Jersey and work while they flew to Orlando to visit Walt Disney World.

But then came trouble. United Airlines canceled the flight 15 minutes before takeoff from Newark Liberty International Airport.

Even as a kid, I had no huge longing for “the Disney experience”. Although it does have some interesting aspects I wouldn’t go now if they paid me to.

...if United canceled the flight 15 minutes prior to takeoff, why couldn’t they get rebooked?

I know several people who had flights canceled during the past year. The airline rebooked them but the next available flight was days away. I suspect the agents at the counter are told not to book them on competing airlines because they were in a group.

Most of those I know who had multiple days before their rescheduled flight followed the same scenario here: They bought tickets for a small group, usually family with kids where they weren't going to split up. They bought their tickets through a third party company such as Orbitz or Travelocity (read the fine print on discount tickets AND "free" upgrade deals). The airline couldn't get them all together on a flight until 3-4 days later.

Any time I had a flight canceled while traveling solo the agents either booked me on the next flight or booked me with a competing airline leaving around the same time as the canceled flight. I had one counter agent walk me over to another airline with all the paperwork for the last seat on their flight which happened to be a first class ticket. (I think she just wanted the excuse to get away from all the irate ticket holders of the canceled flight).

Spoke to a 22 year old about his trip to Disney, said he saved up $6000 and spent it all on one week at Disney World. He goes every year.

Since Covid, many airlines still aren’t running at full capacity. It’s ridiculous. United hosed over my daughter and her husband when they missed a connection in IAD due to fog at the origin and they were trying to make an Alaskan cruise for their honeymoon. United could not get them there on time, even with competing airlines. This would not have happened pre-Covid. So they lost a chunk of money in missing their cruise. The vacation insurance helped except United didn’t offer any compensation or even sympathy. I have most of my miles on United but plan to start switching to Delta. I will miss Star Alliance though.

I know a guy who drove to Space Camp one year during Christmas without checking the schedule and it was closed.

A security guard showed him a little and he turned around and drove home.

This is what I an wondering too. Virtually every airline flies to Orlando. If their flight was cancelled, then take the money and fly on a different airline.

Does this have something to do with United Pilots wanting more money? Fox Business just had a headline regarding this. They were showing big lines at Newark airport.

I took three different airlines last week. Delta, Alaska and United. Delta was by far the best experience(Boston to SLC to Boise). Alaska was fine for an inexpensive flight from Boise to Spokane($97). United was the worst. Both United and Alaska had old planes that seemed like the seats were narrower.
Delta was an Airbus. United was a Boeing.

Here is make experience with rental cars. I arrived at Boise. Went to Hertz. Upgraded my car and on the road in 5 minutes. No one in line in front of me on a Sunday afternoon arrival. They gave me a Challenger instead of a Camry.

Tuesday I fly to Spokane. Alaska flight arrived 10 minutes ahead of time. Walk to the rental car counter. See a huge line at Budget(my rental car company). I waited in line for just over an hour. I even did everything online with their APP as I was waiting in line. Got to the counter, showed them my license and credit card. They said my car was not ready. They would call me when it was cleaned. Half hour later I get a call. They hand me my keys and I was finally on my way. I had to reschedule and appointment.

When I returned to fly out of Spokane this past Sunday at 11am there was again a line. Only at the Budget car rental counter. Also, when I pulled up outside to return the car there were about thirty cars or more in line to be cleaned/processed.

Do NOT rent a car from Budget. Fly Delta IF possible.

Demonstrative of the ability of Disney to influence people. It’s about getting kids to covet the Disney experience and make parents feel guilty for depriving the kids. Better things to do, absolutely. Less expensive also.

“””See a huge line at Budget(my rental car company). I waited in line for just over an hour.”””

I had a similar experience with Dollar in Las Vegas a few weeks ago.

I suspect the car rental companies are trying to improve their financial position after the huge losses they endured during the covid shutdowns by cutting staff to the barebones.

As more stories come out about the terrible service by the airlines and car rental companies, more and more people are going to stay home instead putting up with the mess.

Actually I was told by two different people about an APP for rental cars similar to AirBnB. Where you rent an automobile from an individual person.

It is called TURO. Check it out.
