Do any FReepers use the Brave or Opera web browsers? Feedback wanted!
Me | 7/17/2023 | Paul R.

My last computer question here on FR generated a lot of furor and only limited useful information (mostly positive comments regarding the Firefox browser.) But I'd like more info (feedback) from FReepers who may have used Brave or Opera, for comparison, as I got none in my prior thread. Pro's and cons from hopefully extensive use would be great to receive! In online articles, Brave seems particularly well thought of from a privacy and security standpoint, without going to the extremes (and more limited functionality) of TOR.

If you’re up for a little digging take a look at “ungoogled chrome”. Used it for a while, went back to Firefox due to non-chrome problems. Had no problems with the chrome.
Compiled versions here

Compile your own here.

I’m on FreeBSD.

"Google owns Verizon"

That didn't sound likely to me so I checked...

Who is the major stockholder of Verizon?

Top Shareholders

The Vanguard Group, Inc. BlackRock, Inc. State Street Global Advisors, Inc. Charles Schwab Investment Management, Inc.

Neither Google nor Alphabet Group appeared in the top ten. I have checked multiple references.

"Comparisons with Firefox are welcome, but I do NOT need sales pitches for Firefox without “hands on” experience with Brave or Opera for comparison. (I already have the stand-alone or comparisons-with-Chrome sales pitches for Firefox.) Gracias!"

Luddite version: Brave > Opera

Non-Luddite version: Firefox > Brave > Opera

De nada.

To my knowledge, Brave does not offer a VPN, free or otherwise.

Brave does offer a VPN and firewall. Ten bucks a month or one hundred for a year. Five devices.

Google have partnership relationship with Verizon

Google owns Android since 2009

Yes. Blackrock and Vanguard have an interest in them. But each has 6 or 7% of the company. Blackrock & Vangard are huge and they own an interest in huge numbers of companies.

https://www.partnerbase.com/google/verizon-enterprise-solutions

I was wrong about Google owning Verizon, but they do have a partnership base.

Brave Browser ("BB")

Brave Community

Help Center and Resources

Browser Support

Routine: Back up Bookmarks manually, and save those bookmarks as a .html file to some external storage.

Use a good password wallet. Routine: Back up your password wallet ("pw") data, and save that data to some external storage. BB has a built-in password function, but users fail to respect their need to maintain backup. Failure to make a routine of backing up an Internet browser users's pw-combo data leads to trouble, and other BB users suggest using something other than the built-in BB pw wallet function.

Brave Browser is based upon Google's Chromium engine. The Chromium engine selected by Brave Browser developers, is "de-Googled" - and then to that, various creations and tools are assembled bu Brave.

Some Brave Browser development occurs at GitHub:

Ad-Blocking

AdBlock filter developers and Brave Browser have a working relationship. I am uncertain about what would be an exact formal relationship, if any, between AdBlock Plus and BB.

A BB team member, Fanboynz, who participates in the Brave Community, is apparently the author, or one of the author's, of Easylist.

Extensions

You may choose some extensions from among several add-on's / extensions acquired from the Google Chrome Web Store. But on occasion, there may be an extension that is problematic.

Disabling and removing extensions, followed by installing each extension one-at-a-time to be tested on its own, usually finds the troublesome extension.

Often, an issue that a Brave Browser user has with an extensions, is reported to the Brave Community, where you may observe the proceedings. Facebook's WhatsApp Web, is an example:

Facebook Not Working Consistently

Whatsapp Web is not working

I have not looked to see the status of that problem, since 1 year ago. (I do not use WhatsApp Web.)

I recommend learning as much as you can about the Brave Browser Settings. Make notes. Keep bookmarks of the URL addresses for various Settings windows, such as:

Once you disable Brave Shields for a particular site the browser retains that setting until it is reenabled.

Thanks!

I have Brave installed and “de-cluttered” now. Note that I have this de-cluttering down to 2 bars at the top of the page (and the small fields to either side that house icons like the “Home” button that I turned on, “Exit”, “Brave Shields”, “VPN”*, and so on.) Great — I want all the window area I can get, available for the page I’m viewing.

Except... No “Bookmarks” / “Favorites” Directory icon / button. Well, not one that brings up all the saved bookmarks. I tried closing and reopening Brave - no dice. The button / icon I turned on (just like I turned on the “Home” icon / button), only allows one to edit a bookmark for the page one is on, or, create a new bookmark if the page has not yet been saved.

I needed to do a restart of the machine anyway - still no dice. Darn. An always displayed icon / button to bring up the bookmarks directory is quite handy. (The setup in the ol’ IE was one of IE’s best features.)

Come to find out that if I mouse over the sidebar (now set to only make its appearance if I mouse over the right Brave window edge), the Bookmarks icon that brings up the Bookmarks Directory lives there. Well, that icon being right at the top of the sidebar means I can just mouse over to the spot I know the Bookmarks Directory is going to pop up at and click it. I think I can remember that, and it’s still pretty quick. I can live with it. Hopefully I’ll remember it when I get another 10 years older. :-)

*I’ve not messed with Brave’s VPN trial yet. Maybe this weekend...

So far, so good. Speed so far seems fine, tho’ I’ve not tried anything really “hairy” like 15 Brave windows open at a time. Next, maybe I’ll try Brave Shield on You Tube. ;-)

Is it possible to merge bookmarks from two different machines sensibly, or, import bookmarks from a second or even third machine to an empty bookmarks folder or folders on the primary machine?

Oh, this is TOO funny!

I wonder what problems that poster would have with the original default IrfanView icon??!!

Nice new Brave logo’s though...

In Windows OS, location of Brave Browser Bookmarks file:

See:
https://community.brave.com/t/bookmarks-address/455530

File location:
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Default\Bookmarks

The Brave Browser Bookmarks file is a JSON file, not an HTML file.

In order to save your Bookmarks data as an HTML file, use the Bookmarks Manager and select Export Bookmarks.

This is a heads-up for Freepers considering moving to Brave:

One domain where you will need to disable Brave Shields is Rumble.com

I’ve tweaked a few more settings - so far, I’m liking Brave quite a lot. Likely my biggest complaint is having the sidebar pop up if I drift slightly too far to the right when using the vertical scroll bar. But, I like having the sidebar on the left less - at least so far.

Brave’s whacking of ads en-masse on YouTube is wonderful! I can listen to a long song without an ad interrupting it! And most any ad beleaguered page seems to load much faster.

Google (aka Verizon) does not like Brave, I’m sure it is more secure. I recently removed it because I could not figure out how to make it behave on Verizon system.

I use Brave on my Samsung S22 (Android) and Verizon without any issues whatsoever. Installed and worked properly with zero complications.
