The Toronto Police Service (TPS) is shutting down the licensed bar inside its downtown headquarters that’s served senior officers mostly below the radar for more than 30 years, after a possible connection to a superintendent’s drunk driving crash.
A memo went out to all civilian and uniformed senior officers recently that police chief Myron Demkiw’s office has decided not to renew the licence for the bar, which did not serve the rank and file but senior officers could access as a perk. A TPS spokesperson confirmed the move.
“The Chief’s Office, in consultation with the Executive Officer Lounge Committee, notified senior officers that the AGCO-approved licence will not be renewed,” TPS spokesperson Stephanie Sayer said in an emailed statement.
“The licence was used infrequently, and largely for formal functions, like retirements or when hosting dignitaries. Moving forward, the Service will apply for a Special Occasions Permit from the AGCO should we decide to host an event where alcohol may be served.”
Been there a few times...never saw a bar. Must of been in the back somewhere. It wouldn’t have been a good look if it was visible.
odd factoid...
Most everyone in Mayberry was single, except Otis, who got drunk, complaining about his wife and the jail get-away-from her, self check-in.
I believe Floyd the barber is exception.
Propaganda destruction of society even back then.
Bar in the HQ!? Who thought that was a good idea?
“Who thought that was a good idea?”
My thought exactly!

Maybe. Or maybe it was too risky to show Andy or Barney as being married. By that, I mean suppose the casting didn’t work out? A girlfriend could easily be written out of the show. A wife not so much.
You might recall that Andy’s first girlfriend was Elinor Donahue. But it didn’t work out, and her character was dropped after the first season.
Side note: Funny how I can remember all the details from long-ago TV shows, but I can’t remember where I just put my car keys.
Typical, there’s always that one ahole that ruins things for everyone else.
I once attended a funeral for 4 RCMP officers killed in the line of duty in Edmonton. Just about every large Police department in the US and every US fed LEO agency sent representatives.
After the services they invited all us US LEOs to to their provincial headquarters. They had three bars in the building, one for the rank and file, one for the sergeants and another for senior management.
We drank to our hears content in all three bars and never could buy a drink. We decided to bale at about 3 am and the provincial cops gave us a marked unit running with emergency lights to escort us to our hotel.
I thought these Canadians are very enlightened.

,,,
I’m on that plan
The US is weird about alcohol compared to most non-Muslim countries, partly because Baptists and Methodists are against drinking. We had Prohibition, and still have dry counties. In the UK and Ireland, 12-years-olds can drink in pubs.
FUZZ BAR
In Texas, a minor may consume an alcoholic beverage if it is in the visible presence of the minor’s adult parent, guardian or spouse.
In real life, Andy was a far left DemoRat, which probably affected casting and the script...
