Maybe just California
California has always been the most heavy-handed with this stuff, so it's quite possible. IIRC, the non-California specs dropped to the 305 if you wanted a manual transmission, but the 350 could be had with the automatic. That never made sense to me. I guess shift points and rpm could be better managed with the automatic (a total farce, since the transmissions were easily modified for little cost).
And they were putting in Oldsmobile 403 when they ran out of Pontiac 400 back then
I had a new ‘78 almost waited for a ‘79 but you could only get a 403 when you got an automatic.
I ordered very late in the year.
Well hell - I just remodeled my kitchen, so I guess I’m out.
There was only one that I really lusted after - the '73 Firebird Formula 455 that my friend's mom drove. Ascot silver, dual scoop Ram-Air hood, honeycomb wheels, just amazing. I dropped hints that I wanted by buy it, but they held on to it until I was away at college, then traded it for something tragically boring.
People never knew what they had.
I miss the 1970s. Such great cars.
The radio was great, most of the time.
Haven’t seen a guy in a few years. He has a ‘73 or ‘75 SD.
Comparing a modern car with EFI and computerized everything to a smog-strangled late 70s car is not a valid comparison. After 1970 big V8 s lost a lot of power due to emissions regulations, and technology was a ways off from regaining the lost ground.
As a comparison, my friend’s moms ‘69 Caprice with a 350 made 300 hp. The ‘77 Impala we had with the same engine made 150 hp.
☹️
If the Challenger is such a winner, why is it going away?

Noise? It’s beautiful music.
I didn't get why the author kept trying to compare a '79 T/A to the '23 Challenger.
A modern Honda 4-banger would prob. beat 79 T/A in acceleration and handling.....and fuel efficiency. Different era.
“Will not be missed”
I agree.
They’re mostly driven by hoodrats and guys who over compensate for what they lack between the legs.
Yea those 5 foot runts that used to drive those super bikes switched to giant expensive pickup trucks.
Their manhood is still in check
but much safer now..
“Unfortunately, you can’t get a manual transmission with the 3.6 V6 (a manual was standard with the last Pontiac 400 in the ’79 Trans-Am). An eight speed automatic is the only transmission with this engine. Even so, it is just as quick to 60 – which it can do in 6.3 seconds”
6.3 is that right? I know it is a heavy car, but that isn’t that impressive. It only has about three tenths on my 201 HP Elantra GT Sport.
