Sarah Silverman Is Suing the Creators of ChatGPT
Far Out Magazine ^ | MON 10TH JUL 2023 | Thomas Leatham

Actor and comedian Sarah Silverman is suing the creators of AI software ChatGPT over the unauthorised use of her 2010 book The Bedwetter. The details arrived in a lawsuit last Friday (July 7th) in a U.S. District Court.

Silverman has come together with writers Richard Kadrey and Christopher Golden in two lawsuits against OpenAI and Meta, the creators of the AI chatbot LLaMA, a river to ChatGPT.

The suits have been filed accusing the companies of illegally training their respective AI programmes with texts from the above-stated authors’ works without acquiring permission.

They go on to explain that the AI models have also been trained by using content from “shadow libraries”, such as “Library Genesis and Z-Library”, which are said to be “flagrantly illegal”.

The plaintiffs of the lawsuit argue that ChatGPT gets around copyright law by producing a “derivative” version of a given copyrighted work when asked to summarise its sources.

Silverman, Kadrey, and Golden’s attorneys, Joseph Saveri and Matthew Butterick, discuss the impact of such AI programmes on genuine artists and writers on their website LLMlitigation.

They share stories from “writers, authors, and publishers who are concerned about [ChatGPT’s] uncanny ability to generate text similar to that found in copyrighted textual materials, including thousands of books.”

LLaMA is the Facebook/Meta R&D LLM that was leaked. It will run on an RTX 4080 or better. It’s in the wild.

Not sure how having an AI Large Language Model like ChatGPT read you book and answer questions about it is any different from having a person read your book and answer questions about it.

This is actually a big deal. I hope the lawsuit proceeds quickly and in favor of copyright holders.

The notion that a Large Language Model can scan and regurgitate information in some "Turing test" or Searle's "Chinese room" form as to fool the public is faulty, in that its span ranges over much copyrighted material.

A friend from Europe sent me a ChatGPT biography of me. Amusing, it was full of errors because there are many errors about me -- and anyone with an internet presence -- to be searched. Consider such contradictory things as we all say about "notable" Democrats and RINOs. The only way out for programmers as they play the "Artificial Ignoramus" -- with credit to Freeper adorno from whom I take the lingo -- is the restrict searches to non-copyrighted materials, or perhaps end up playing the Harris "word salad" game trying to paraphrase while skirting plagiarism charges and copyright infringement.

I imagine a decent class action attorney or twelve could carve the AI world up into many pieces.

I think she has XX chromosomes but she may be missing a few brain cells. This was one of her classics, mistaking survey markers as a Nazi swastika. 🤦🤦🤦

For the first time in my life, I agree with Sarah Silverman. These bots are apparently free to plagiarize copyrighted material and pass it off as something they came up with. I suspect they are also doing a lot of patent infringement as well.

Maybe a few strategic lawsuits will slow down the rapidly expanding process of everyone being replaced by bots and software.

“These bots are apparently free to plagiarize copyrighted material and pass it off as something they came up with”

This is a misunderstanding. They do not plagiarize. They calculate statistical relationships between sequences of words, and then construct new sentences based on the overall statistical relationships. It is learning, not plagerizing.

If you read this comment, incorporate it into your thoughts and then compose a reply, you aren’t violating my copyright.

They need to make AI bots black and gay. Then they can say and do anything they want.
BTW Just call it”sampling”

Actor and comedian Sarah Silverman

Fake news. She's not a comedian as in not funny.

That's true. But you must admit, those pretty puppies have a personality of their own. Unfortunately her noxious personality prevails. Perhaps if she could shut up long enough, they would have a better chance.
