Months ago, I put up a thread of which cover songs were better than the original(with about 300 replies), I guess I will be called a racist, for saying this version is better than the original.

Many agree with you as Luke's version is already #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 (Tracy's original climbed to #6 in 1988).

Ironically, keeping "Fast Car" out of the top slot is another country superstar, Morgan Wallen, whose "Last Night" has already spent 13 weeks at the top.

Not sure if Tracy has commented on the Luke Combs version of her song but he is definitely growing her bank account.

I like Tracy Chapman’s better. It’s kind of like “My Funny Valentine” where the song takes on a different nature depending on the sex of the singer.

Winner should have been Cash’s cover of Hurt.

Many times a singer covering a song originally sung by the opposite gender will switch up the gender in the lyrics. But it really didn't make sense in this case, as the entire song revolves around a girl being whisked away to a better life by a man with a fast car. It would have been a bit awkward for Luke to sing "checkout boy - in fact it would have sounded rather gay considering the rest of the lyrics.

When Joan Baez covered "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", she didn't change the gender in that song either, because it just wouldn't have sounded right.

I think Luke made the right choice here.

Well you can leave the show a little early then and beat the traffic as he’ll be closing the show with that song. Probably for the rest of his career.

Totally agree with you. Combs sings it great, but Chapman’s version just makes more sense, given the lyrics and the meaning of the song.

It’s a good cover and I like it but it doesn’t really bring anything new to the song. I also find her voice more interesting than his, so overall I prefer the original.

I haven’t heard his version yet, but her version is heartbreakingly beautiful. Iconic.

I love Combs but I’d have to vote for Chapman, she definitely put a lot more feeling into it.
