Former USA gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar is 'lucky to be alive' after being stabbed multiple times by another inmate during an assault in federal prison.

Nassar, 59, was stabbed twice in the neck, twice in the back and six times in the chest at the United States Penitentiary Coleman in Florida.

'He has a collapsed lung,' said Joe Rojas' who is the prison guard union chief.

'He is lucky to be alive and the only reason he is alive, in my opinion, is because of the staff members who were there.'

The extent of his injuries is currently unknown, with sources confirming that he suffered a collapsed lung during the attack at 2.35pm on Sunday, and remains in a stable condition in hospital.

He was convicted in 2018 of sexually assaulting members of the US team, including Olympic gold medalists Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney.

Nassar was serving decades in prison after abusing members of the squad under the guise of medical treatment.

The Bureau of Prisons confirmed the assault to DailyMail.com but declined to identify any of the prisoners' involved.

Officials said staff provided life-saving measures and the inmate was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

They added that the FBI was notified, saying in a statement to: 'No staff or other inmates were injured and at no time was the public in danger. An internal investigation is ongoing.'

Nassar admitted to sexually assaulting the athletes when he worked at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians.

“...we as a society don’t seem to have the balls to do it.”

My thoughts exactly. I don’t like the idea of prison justice. People should be punished for their crimes. Too many times our society becomes squeamish about meting out effective punishment. I don’t mean cruel or unusual punishment. I am all for corporal punishment for minor offenses and a quick firing squad or hanging for capital offenses such as treason or child trafficking. However, if someone is to be incarcerated for a period of time, his loss of freedom is his punishment, not being assaulted by other more violent inmates. That was not the sentence. I am not saying I feel sorry for this perv, I just think society should take responsibility for the adequate punishment of its offenders and likewise the well being of those incarcerated. “What should we call the soldier(s) at Camp Pendleton that allegedly bought that 14 year girl and kept her in their barricks (sic)?”

Marines live at Camp Pendleton. And he should be called a pervert monster, too.

Agreed. And for the record, that's a very sarcastic "That's a shame."

He ain’t gonna last long in the pokey. The inmates REALLY don’t like the prisoners who’ve done things to kids. This is just them saying howdy. Next time won’t be as nice.

Totally agree but I would put the onus on government and not society. I think society is already there.

This is just outrageous. Our taxes are paying for this.

Why can’t we properly train our most violent scabventilators to be EFFECTIVE with a knife? I mean, come on. One stab, one kill.

Time for “knife control” lessons.

Maybe they can make this a periodic treatment... “stabbed twice in the neck, twice in the back and six times in the chest” and still breathing. That actually must take some skill.
