Widely consumed vegetable oil leads to an unhealthy gut, finds mouse study (Soybean and corn oil colitis concerns from high Omega-6 content)
Medical Xpress / University of California - Riverside / Gut Microbes ^ | July 5, 2023 | Iqbal Pittalwala / Poonamjot Deol et al

High consumption of soybean oil has been linked to obesity and diabetes and potentially autism, Alzheimer's disease, anxiety, and depression. Add now to this growing list ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, characterized by chronic inflammation of the large intestine.

Researchers examined the gut of mice that were consistently fed a diet high in soybean oil for up to 24 weeks in the lab. They found beneficial bacteria decreased and harmful bacteria (specifically, adherent invasive Escherichia coli) increased—conditions that can lead to colitis.

Soybean oil is the most commonly used edible oil in the United States.

"While our bodies need 1%–2% of linoleic acid daily, based on the paleodiet, Americans today are getting 8%–10% of their energy from linoleic acid daily, most of it from soybean oil," she said. "Excessive linoleic acid negatively affects the gut microbiome."

Deol and her co-authors found that a diet high in soybean oil encourages the growth of adherent invasive E. coli in the gut. This bacterium uses linoleic acid as a source of carbon to meet its nutritional demands. Further, several beneficial bacteria in the gut are not able to withstand linoleic acid and die off, which results in harmful bacteria growing out. Adherent invasive E. coli has been identified in humans to cause IBD.

"It's the combination of good bacteria dying off and harmful bacteria growing out that makes the gut more susceptible to inflammation," Deol said. "Further, linoleic acid causes the intestinal epithelial barrier to become porous."

The barrier function of the intestinal epithelium is critical for maintaining a healthy gut; when disrupted, it can lead to increased permeability or leakiness. The researchers note that the increase in IBD parallels the increase in soybean oil consumption in the U.S. and hypothesize the two may be linked.

I recommend Lard.

Exactly !

I am more and more convinced that the seed oils + corn syrup are at the heart of America’s obesity epidemic. (with Canada and the UK close behind in both seed oils and obesity)

Obesity rates have exploded starting about when seed oils were substituted for lard and butter, as well as corn syrup for sugar and diet soda

Olive oil for me almost exclusively. Except... When I need sesame oil for my Korean recipes and pumpkin seed oil for my Polish recipes. Once a year MAYBE peanut oil for my ginger wasabi salad dressing. I don’t know the last time I bought that wesson veggie oil stuff.

Mrs Tudorfly, personally known as My Darlin’, says no one should ever eat soybeans or soybean oil, nor canola oil. In her learned view, they are unhealthy, and should not be consumed. And an amazing number of processed foods, such as potato chips are cooked in them.

I'm thinking that people who are sensitive to gluten are really reacting to the oils. When they restrict gluten, they are also restricting these oils. Try finding mass produced bread that doesn't include them.

When you go Keto, same thing.

Seed and nut oils are in EVERYTHING!!!

We use olive oil, butter, and some coconut oil.

I have battled IBS for years, and I am finally in remission but a huge part of managing it was staying away from seed and vegetable oils. Even a jar of peanuts will be roasted in bad oils.

After reading this, search for and read an article on Canola and other seed oils. After reading them, you’ll be guzzling soy bean oil.

IMO, just more repackaged misguided advice about fats. Fats don’t cause metabolic issues, carbs/sugars cause metabolic issues and weight gain.

Eat as much fatty meat, eggs, dairy and leafy salads as you want, you’ll be skinny as a rail and have cholesterol and glucose under 100. Most everything about your health will improve. The food pyramid is government propaganda.

I am more and more convinced that the seed oils + corn syrup are at the heart of America’s obesity epidemic.

And somehow - by an amazing coincidence - seed oil and corn syrup producers are at the heart of America’s political corruption epidemic. Along with their good friends in the health care and pharmaceutical industries who love the revenues those producers send their way.

I have Ulcerative Colitis. My GI doc wants me to start infusions, as other meds aren’t working anymore. We have 3 different types of cooking oil in the kitchen-canola, vegetable, and olive. After investigating, we found out that the vegetable oil is really 100% soybean oil, canola oil is another name for Rapeseed Oil, rapeseed being primarily from Canada.
As far as linoleic acid goes, lots of info here:

I had it many years ago when I was young. I quit eating cookies and candy bars and that solved it. More than likely the hydrogenated vegetable oil.

Funny story, I got an award for my spicy navy bean soup recipe. I had been using an ounce of Smart Balance Omega. Then as is typical, it was changed.
