My theory: the further away from Mexico that you go, the worse the Mexican food. Also, my favorite Mexican food area: New Mexico (Az is a close second)

Poliberto’s on Baseline in Tempe, AZ.
Great Mexican food at a value price. Lotsa locals, especially on weekends for their menudo (though not my cup of tea)

My favorite Mexican restaurant in the world is La Placita in Albuquerque, which is in an eighteenth-century building.

Funny, in 1976 I went to a Mexican joint in Chicgo that was way better than what I’d had in the Yucatan the year before.

If you get a chance, try Old Town San Diego

I disagree. Some of the best Mexican food I have had was in northern Illinois. All it takes is one Mexican family that knows what its doing, local Mexican grocers, and a critical mass of people who like real Mexican food.
The building is now torn down, but El Rebozo in Rockford had all the signs (tripe and goat on the menu), house made salsa and chips, Mariachi music on the juke box, or Novellas on the TV with women so beautiful that you watch even though you don't know Spanish.
