My theory: the further away from Mexico that you go, the worse the Mexican food. Also, my favorite Mexican food area: New Mexico (Az is a close second)

I disagree. Some of the best Mexican food I have had was in northern Illinois. All it takes is one Mexican family that knows what its doing, local Mexican grocers, and a critical mass of people who like real Mexican food.

The building is now torn down, but El Rebozo in Rockford had all the signs (tripe and goat on the menu), house made salsa and chips, Mariachi music on the juke box, or Novellas on the TV with women so beautiful that you watch even though you don't know Spanish.

Admittedly, the comment made is a bit dated as things have changed over the years and there are exceptions to any generalization made.
