Oleandrin is a main phytochemical of oleander, and is associated with the toxicity of oleander sap. It has similar properties to digoxin, a prescription drug used to treat heart failure. Oleandrin works by inhibiting the sodium-potassium ATPase pump, which is a protein that helps to regulate the movement of sodium and potassium ions across cell membranes. This inhibition can lead to a number of effects, including increased heart rate, decreased heart contractions, and changes in electrical activity in the heart.
.....and death.....................
Oleander is the main “freeway plant” in California. Nothing can kill them, not drought, not car fumes, not tire dust, not cars running into them. I’ve got a stand of the plant between my house and the neighbor’s house. The plants are weeds, growing 20 feet per year and flopping over.
Are there any supplements we can look at which would provide these substances?
