FOX News, post-Tucker
American Thinker ^ | 7 Jul, 2023 | Richard Kirk

FOX hasn't done itself any favors by canning Tucker.

So FOX News has decided to replace Tucker Carlson with Bill O’Reilly’s one-time man-on-the-street interviewer, Jesse Watters--someone whose gravitas rating hovers in the same abysmal neighborhood as the network’s late-night darling, Greg Gutfeld.

What attracted folks like me to Tucker’s program was his unpredictability, his willingness to let guests talk, his repeated calls to spend time with family and loved ones, and his apparent devotion to a moral vision rooted in religious tradition---all of which informed his tagline opposition to “lying, pomposity, smugness, and group think.” The “group think” moniker wasn’t limited to the multitude of Woke idiocies but also extended to third-rail GOP topics, most conspicuously to opinions about the war in Ukraine. Republicans like Lindsey Graham who are welcomed on Hannity’s program frequently found themselves targets of Carlson’s anti-neocon, open border criticism.

A Mediaite analysis of primetime ratings showed FOX News lost a million viewers after Tucker’s firing, viewership going from an average of 2.6 million in the four weeks prior to Carlson’s departure to a 1.6 million average in the four subsequent weeks. The hemorrhage in Tucker’s 8 p.m. Eastern time slot was even more dramatic, falling from 3.27 million to 1.49 million viewers—an outflow that continues to this day.

I doubt the network’s brass expect to recover Tucker’s audience with Watters at the helm, a broadcaster whose comic persona and intellectual shallowness (He wasn’t sure Hawaii was the 50th state) detract significantly from the impact of his largely accurate but analogy-saturated critiques of leftist policies. Indeed, one might argue that the Paul Ryan contingent on the network’s board have a death wish for FOX News as a Trump-friendly conservative voice. What else can explain Greg Gutfeld’s ubiquitous presence as a regular host on The Five...

Is Fox still suing Tucker over his Twitter posts?

"Tucker's willingness to let guests talk."

Yeah, I like that. If you let a guy talk long enough, he just might say something.. Even a stinking politician lawyer might let something slip...

All of cable news is on the decline. It’s a dying medium. Cable subscribers keep doing two things; dying themselves or cutting the cord. Young folks don’t subscribe. People are either ignoring the news or looking towards online sources. FNC has four former ratings stars all available online; Beck, BOR, Kelly and Carlson. Carlson hasn’t made a living off his online presence yet, but it appears the other three survive with Beck doing quite well.

I don’t know what happens to former CNN and MSNBC opinion hacks, but perhaps they have their small audiences follow them to online programs as well.

Watters is great for newcomers to the movement - the young and middle class. I’m not selling him shot for the niche he’s carved out - it matters. And his fresh takes on the political scene is fun.

That said, FOXNews blew it when they let Tucker go - he was far and away the best FOX had. I blame the same insecurity that caused FOX decisions makers s to fill the network with bimbos under the age of 30 = the ‘Bill O’Reilly’ middle-aged crisis syndrome. FOX should bring Tucker back and put him on at 11.

FR has always been amusing when it decides a media outlet should be shunned.

Articles from that outlet still appear on FR and generate click revenue for the outlet.

Comment threads start and things are questioned, and the otherwise wise head over to read the actual article and be fully informed, thereby yup, generating clicks.

And absolutely never will you see threads listing the outlet’s advertisers and their products along with email addresses of those advertisers to inform them of boycott because of where they advertise. The left does this, pounding Twitter. FR? Nope.

The foundation for any business is do not alienate your core customers. Fox Board of Directors and Upper Management arrogantly thought they could disrespect a large portion of their market.

Shaun Thompson coined the perfect description: “Foxweiser News”

Most of what they report on in the evening is already covered by various websites during the day. There’s very little in the way of value added content IMO; just a lot of rambling commentary and talking heads trying to be an expert on everything.

Paul Ryan’s agenda is purely political. He could care less about customer retention.

Any mention of Fox News on Free Republic, always brings comments of how they don’t watch Fox, gave up on Fox years ago, etc.

Some commenters say they gave up on Fox after Tucker was fired. Others say they gave up after election night 2020, after Fox called Arizona for Biden, before other networks did.

Others say Hannity is a loud mouth and he’s not a true conservative.

Everyone has their reasons for disliking Fox News.

My thinking is that we have freedom of choice, and if you don’t want to watch Fox News, then don’t watch them. But I do wonder what news people do watch, since I can’t believe too many Freepers would choose to watch MSNBC or CNN instead.

“I can’t believe too many Freepers would choose to watch MSNBC or CNN instead.”

As if those are the only alternatives to Fox.
