CLIVE, Iowa (CNN) - A family who lost their home in a tornado is feeling grateful after winning a $2 million Powerball jackpot.
Tammy Gordy said she realized they’d won big when she used the Iowa Lottery mobile app over the weekend to check some lottery tickets she had in her purse.
She was in complete shock when the results of one of her tickets showed they were suddenly millionaires.
Iowa’s newest Powerball winner says she plans to use part of her winnings to finish the family’s home they are building.
According to the Iowa Lottery, Gordy lived in the Agency area back in April 2001 when the community was heavily damaged by a tornado and their home was destroyed in the storm.
Gordy said their new house project has been on a few holds over the years, but the money will help speed up construction.
The Gordy family said they will now also look for some upgrades for their new home such as a walk-in closet and a jacuzzi.

I do love a happy ending to a sad story. God does move in mysterious ways.
What’s that saying? Your chances of winning the lottery is the same as being struck by lightning. A connection?
MOVE!
LOL! Right on!
If you have insurance, you get a tax free payout to rebuild.
If you win lottery, you will pay close to 1/3 in taxes on winnings before you can spend $1 on rebuild.
Isn’t amerika great?
And 22 years later they're hoping to speed up the rebuild????
My bad — but this ain’t no story 22 years apart. Bad media.
good for them, about time someone deserving gets it.
2/3 of something is better than nothing.....
Wonderful story.
“… you will pay close to 1/3 in taxes…”
Make that well over 40%, depending on state taxes. Feds alone are over 37%.
good for them. They are gonna hear from cousins they never knew they had!
…and they’ll get to keep $47.68 after the government gets ITS take first…
According to the National Weather Service, a person has a 1-in-15,300 chance of getting struck by lightning in their lifetime, defined as an 80-year span.
That makes your odds of getting struck by lightning nearly 20,000 times higher than hitting the winning numbers for the next jackpot.
It’s just bad news for them I guess. NOW, everyone will want to sue them for anything they do wrong, family members will be kidnapped and held for ransom, every scammer will have a new target, etc.
I’ve seen a BUNCH of “Winning the lottery was the worst thing that ever happened to me” videos. It USUALLY goes horribly wrong.
You can blame the govt and media on the exposure for the risk to the winner. It won’t matter if she gave to BLM, those amish will still come a lookin’ for ‘er
Have an attorney create a revocable trust with you as the sole beneficiary (or family too, if you want).
Transfer the winning ticket to the trust.
Let the attorney claim the prize & transfer it to the trust.
In other words, retain your privacy while enjoying the benefits of winning the lottery.
There are attorneys that specialize in these transactions. It may be expensive, but with legal services like most other services, you get what you pay for.
I needed new tires and won $970 in a lottery. Well it was my car that needed the tires.
Yep! That’s what *I* would do as well. But, since we have a picture of her holding the check with her name on it, and enough info in the story to locate her, she didn’t opt for this line of thinking.
