Fans were disappointed the singer chose not to perform his tribute at the Glastonbury Festival
Glastonbury revellers have been moved to tears as Elton John performed Candle In The Wind - even though it was not the 'Diana version'. The legendary star took to the Pyramid Stage at the Glastonbury festival for the first time in what he said may be his last ever performance in the UK.
Sir Elton, 76, played a host of chis classic songs, including Tiny Dancer, Are You Ready For Love, and Don't Go Breaking My Heart. In a move surprising fans, the singer opted to perform the original version of Candle In The Wind, written about Hollywood actress Marylin Monroe.
However, some viewers expressed disappointment that the pop star did not play his 1997 version of the song, which he wrote for the funeral of Princess Diana. "Still hurts when I hear Candle in the Wind it reminds me of when we lost The Peoples Princess Princess Diana and her funeral," one viewer said.

Another added: "For me Candle In The Wind always is Lady Di - Princess Diana our late Queen Of hearts Song," while a third simply said: "Should've sang the Diana version."
Sir Elton originally recorded the ballad in 1973 as a tribute to Marylin Monroe, who died as the age of 36. In 1997, the singer was asked by the Royal Family if he would like to perform a song at the late princess' funeral and the same song sprung into his mind - Diana was also 36 when she died.
One viewer notes: "Can't help but wonder if singing candle in the wind was a nod to Diana (even if it was the Marilyn Monroe version!)"
While fans may have been disappointed at his decision to sing the original, Sir Elton has never performed his 1997 version a second time, vowing not to sing Diana's tribute unless asked to by one of the princess' sons, Princes William and Harry.
That song irritates me in the same way “Imagine” irritates me.
“vowing not to sing Diana’s tribute unless asked to by one of the princess’ sons, Princes William and Harry.”
Knowing Harry, he’d ask Elton to sing it, then sell tickets to attend the singing...while complaining how the concert messed with his privacy.
It’s not a bad song, but it was a bit lazy to just recycle someone else’s tribute song and change a few lyrics to make it about another young, dead blonde.
Me too.
Besides, Diana was a tramp, a nothing. She was a member of the Jet Set glitterati.
She wasn't Mother Teresa, quite the opposite.
That you, Keith?
Well, I wish I had Keith’s money, but no. I know more than 4 chords.
For decades, I never gave much thought to the lyrics to “Imagine”, I knew them, but most of the time, the song was a soundtrack song for life, playing in the background here and there. Then when I really listened to them, it occurred to me just how banal and idiotic they were.
“Imagine there’s no Country”.
Oh, sure. And everyone will get along just fine. Not. More likely, people would live in walled cities, armed to the teeth, all the time. I guess if the likes of Soros and the Dems get their wishes, that is what we will see.
As for Diana, I never got it. I was never into the royalty aspect, even if I did appreciate figures like the King Haakon of Norway (who refused to capitulate to the Nazis) and Queen Elizabeth (who took her role as a ceremonial monarch quite seriously).
King Charles is Biden with bad teeth and an English accent.
I found the fascination and hysterical mourning for her kind of creepy. Not for the British, mind you. I excused them due to their relationship to her as ostensible royalty, that was their thing. But the Americans who went teary-eyed ga-ga was just unsettling.
Years later, when Trump beat Hillary, I had the same gut impression watching Leftist women lose their minds. (I lump Leftist men in with them...because)
Charlsie was infatuated with horsey Camilla and Di got no loving. A woman not getting any TLC from hubby can often veer elsewhere. Sure Di wasn’t perfect but calling her a tramp seems a bit harsh.
The thing to remember with “Imagine” is that Lennon was an atheist. And if you are an atheist, and you have good intentions and want the world to be a better place, then you have to delude yourself in some way.
Maybe you’ll delude yourself that an all-powerful government can change human nature and force people to stop doing bad things. Or maybe you’ll delude yourself that if we all just close our eyes, wish real hard, and click our heels together 3 times, we can end war and poverty and strife. But you’re going to have to pick a delusion.
Because, in the real world, only a God has the power to change the fundamental problems that ail our world.
Excellent post, Boogieman.
Captured my sentiments perfectly, it did.
He later repudiated it , and liked Reagan.
Allegedly. I believe that was a second hand report from someone who spoke with him not long before his death, not a direct source like an interview.
If I were there and he’d done the Diana version instead of the correct, original version, I’d have been disappointed.
I may be the only person in the world who thought it was stupid.(and didn’t purchase it)
Hey, you should tell him that. That’s a good idea for him.
There are much, much better Elton John songs.

She didn’t get know loving, she had her own “friends.”
I think a lot of people besides us thought it was stupid.
