A fight over a movie theater seat led to Sunday's fatal shooting in Albuquerque, police say (19-yr old pissed at changing his seat kills 52-yr old patron)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | June 26, 2023 | Ryan Boetel

A 19-year-old man was arrested Monday after allegedly opening fire during a dispute over a movie theater seat late Sunday, leaving one man dead.

Michael Tenorio, 52, was killed and the suspect, Enrique Padilla, 19, was injured at Century Rio theater near Jefferson and Interstate 25. The shooting, in theater 15, sent patrons fleeing from the large cineplex.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court, Tenorio and his wife, Trina Tenorio, arrived at the theater and purchased tickets for the 8:50 p.m. showing of “No Hard Feelings,” a rom-com staring Jennifer Lawrence.

The couple purchased seats 8 and 11 in Row F, and a theater employee advised the Tenorios to sit together and ask the two people in seats 9 and 10 to move down a seat, according to the complaint.

When Padilla and his date showed up to the theater, the young couple started arguing over the seats. Witnesses told police that the two couples were ultimately seated next to each other, but when the employee left the theater, Padilla threw an entire tub of popcorn into Trina Tenorio’s face, according to the complaint.

That’s when, according to witnesses, Tenorio said, “What the hell?” and pushed Padilla into the wall and shots rang out. The complaint says Padilla fled the theater after the shooting and was later found in some bushes outside. He had been shot in the stomach and was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital. A casing found in the bushes matched a casing in the movie theater, according to the complaint. Police didn’t say how they believe Padilla was shot.

A gun with a green laser attached to it was found in the bushes. Witnesses told police that they saw the green laser in the theater during the shooting.

he shot himself in the stomach first and unloaded on the old man not realizing his dilemma...

Ah, based on the report, the suspect shot the victim in the theater, and then ran out side and apparently shot himself while hiding in the bushes outside. One casing was found in the theater, and one outside in the bushes.

You shouldn’t fire in a theater?

We live in Rio Rancho and every now and then my wife loses her mind and suggests we drive down to ABQ to do this or that.

I might go to the Cottonwood Mall area. If I am feeling brave I will venture into the north end of the Westside.

I no longer will cross the river after dark if I am unarmed and definite not alone or only with my wife. MAYBE with another (armed) couple...maybe...

When I was in HS in Phx we had “boondockers” in the desert outside of town. Some guys had kegs and ice in the bed of an old short bed Ford dragging a trailer with a generator to run lights and a band. Good times! Phx PD seemed to usually find us eventually.

JL would not approve of gun play at her movie.

“...the 8:50 p.m. showing of “No Hard Feelings,” a rom-com staring Jennifer Lawrence.”

She plays a woman desperate for cash who accept a parents' offer to sleep with their teenage son for money.

Cultural decline onscreen...and in the audience.

“ Probably stuffing the gun back in his pants with a finger on the trigger. Latest from the local news.”
That would explain the shell casing in the bushes.

Probably for the best he was the only Sheriff’s deputy from San Mateo to the Torrance Co. line from 1943 into the 60’s. There’s a great picture of him with a couple of MP’s after breaking up a fight in Molly’s Bar in Tijeras (still in business!). The MP’s look grim and he’s sporting a huge grin.

I rarely go past 25 and only during the day. ABQ was a nice town when I moved here in ‘92. My wife moved here when Eubank was still a dirt road.

If I understand correctly, one couple had seats 8 and 11 and another couple (including the perp) had seats 9 and 10.

A theatre employee worked it out so both couples could sit together, which seems to me to be common courtesy. A theatre employee should not even have to be involved here.

If I was part of the couple that had seats 9 and 10, I would consider it ludicrous to insist that another couple sit on either side of us because I did not want to move over one seat.

Channel 7 had a news report and video at 6:00 that showed the gun had a “Glock switch” that converts it from semi-automatic to automatic. The video shows the difference with the gun firing continuously but the direction is hard to control and it essentially sprays bullets left to right and up to down. It’s amazing that only one person was killed and the other person hurt was the perp. A Glock switch is illegal in NM and the gun previously had been reported stolen.

This whole thing with reserved seating in a movie theatre is new to me. Is it really so crowded you need assigned seating like for a Broadway play or a football game?

Glock switches are illegal nationwide. He may not have had it on full auto, it has a cyclic rate that would empty a mag in a second or two.

Gunfire in the theatre means more than one shooter, but only one guy had a gun... he shot himself... the casing stuck in his drawers.

More than one shooter? Where does it say that in the report?

Casing stuck in his drawers? Where are you getting this?
