Texas Uber driver fatally shot by passenger who thought she was being kidnapped, police say

El Paso police said in a news release that Phoebe Copas, 48, was a passenger on an Uber ride when she shot driver Daniel Piedra Garcia, 52. The incident happened around 2:20 p.m. on June 16 on U.S. 54 near Loop 375.

According to police, Piedra was driving Copas from the Westside area in El Paso to Mission Valley. During the drive, Copas believed she was being kidnapped and taken to Mexico, police said.

The El Paso Times reports Copas told officers that she saw traffic signs that read "Juarez, Mexico," leading her to believe that her driver was trying to kidnap her.

Copas then took out a gun from her purse and allegedly shot Piedra in the back of the head. The 52-year-old was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

"The investigation does not support that a kidnapping took place or that Piedra was veering from Copas' destination," police said in their news release.

Copas was initially charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, but the charge was upgraded to murder after Piedra died at the hospital days later.

On my phone, the “Uber” app shows route to destination and current location on a map. Shouldn’t be any confusion.

There’s got to be more to this story. Need more background on this woman and what might cause her to be uptight like that.

I use to drive a cab in NYC. Anyone who drives a cab without a bullet proof partition is out of their mind.

Maybe she WAS being kidnapped. I would have to know if the driver was following the prescribed route.

Phoebe Copas, 48, of Tompkinsville, Kentucky

What is a KY woman doing way out in El Paso in the first place? Oh, Copas was visiting her boyfriend in El Paso at the time of the shooting.

And, from Fox, more info - Piedra’s vehicle came to a stop after crashing into barriers on a freeway, though it was not close to a bridge or port of entry into Mexico.

My friends in El Paso don't go to Juarez during the good times, much less in the last decade!

Another example of a person lacking impulse control. Lately, there seems to be a lot of that going around.

He stayed on the route, per the police investigation.

Have you ever been to El Paso? I can see how an idiot, or someone one drugs, could see the multiple signs on the freeway saying the exit for Mexico is coming up would mistake it for being where they are headed. Even if you are not taking the exit, there are multiple warning signs. One I can think of is warning you not to carry firearms to the border crossing.

Anyone who drives a cab without a bullet proof partition is out of their mind.

I feel the same about Uber, food delivery apps, and dating apps!

Thanks, I haven't previously seen anything about "crashing into barriers on a freeway". Since he was shot in the head it should not be surprising that he had trouble controlling the vehicle.

Not very bright, shooting the person while he’s driving.
