Russians Who Fled Abroad Face Europe ‘Concentration Camps’: Lawmaker
Newsweek
David Brennan
6/19/23 at 6:00 AM EDT
https://www.newsweek.com/russians-fled-abroad-europe-concentration-camps-petr-pavel-vyacheslav-volodin-ukraine-1807581

A senior Russian politician considered part of President Vladimir Putin’s “inner circle” has called on Russian emigrants to return to the country they fled in the aftermath of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, claiming that “hysteria” in Western nations makes it unsafe for them to remain abroad.

Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the State Duma—the lower house of Russia’s Federal Assembly—appealed to citizens abroad on Telegram on Monday to “finally” reverse their decision to flee.

“Today there is an opportunity to return, tomorrow with the hysteria that is escalating in Western Europe, it may no longer be,” wrote Volodin, who has previously served as an aide to Putin, a deputy prime minister, and is partially credited with the president’s increasingly nationalistic ideological turn in recent years.

“In order to better understand the situation around those who left, it is enough to familiarize yourself with the statement of the Czech president, who invited Russian citizens living abroad to be sent to concentration camps,” Volodin wrote, misrepresenting President Petr Pavel’s recent remarks.

Russian State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin speaks during a meeting of lawmakers at the Tauride Palace on April 27, 2022, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Volodin called on Russian emigrants to return to the country they fled in the aftermath of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Pavel—one of the most ardent supporters of Ukraine and critics of Russia among European Union and NATO leaders—said last week that while he sympathized with the plight of Russians who had fled the Kremlin’s war, “when there is an ongoing war, the security measures related to Russian nationals should be stricter than in normal times.”

“All Russians living in Western countries should be monitored much more than in the past because they are citizens of a nation that leads an aggressive war,” Pavel said in an interview with the Prague-based, U.S.-financed Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. “That’s simply the cost of war.”

Russian state media quickly picked up on the comments, equating Pavel’s interview with a call to intern Russian citizens, noting the president’s mention of the World War Two-era U.S. internment camps for people of Japanese descent.

Presidential spokesperson Markéta Řeháková later told AFP that Pavel was in no way suggesting internment or persecution of Russian citizens.

Still, Volodin is among the Kremlin-aligned figures looking to leverage the comments to help frame Moscow’s war on Ukraine as a wider, forced confrontation with the West. “After such words, our citizens, still remaining in Western countries, need to think about where they went, what they found, and what awaits them,” Volodin wrote on Telegram.

Some 900,000 Russians are thought to have left the country since the Kremlin launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Moscow has sought to keep the door open to returnees, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov saying in March that the government intends to retain a dialogue with those who fled abroad.

Newsweek has contacted the Russian Foreign Ministry to request comment.

Russia Loses ‘Four Companies’ on One Front Line in 24 Hours: Commander
NEWSWEEK
Isabel van Brugen On
6/19/23 at 5:06 AM EDT
https://www.newsweek.com/russia-casualties-troop-losses-counteroffensive-latest-ukraine-war-1807549

Russia lost more than “four companies” of troops in the space of 24 hours, a Ukrainian military official said on Sunday, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that a counteroffensive was progressing well.

“Every day turns into hell for Russians. Our soldiers skilfully destroy the enemy,” Brigadier General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, commander of Ukrainian troops in the southern Tavriia sector, said in a post on his Telegram channel.
Ukraine launched its long anticipated counteroffensive to recapture Russian-occupied territory in early June. Deputy

Ukrainian Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said on Monday morning that Ukraine’s armed forces has so far retaken eight settlements, while Zelensky aide Mykhailo Podolyak has suggested that a decisive counteroffensive from Kyiv hasn’t yet begun.

Maliar said Ukraine has liberated the settlements of: Novodarovka, Levadne, Storozheve, Makarivka, Blagodatne, Lobkove, Neskuchne and Piatykhatky. She also said that over the past two weeks, Ukraine’s military has advanced seven kilometers (four miles) to the south, recapturing 113 square kilometers (44 square miles) of its territory. This couldn’t immediately be verified by Newsweek.

“In the Tavriia direction, units of missile troops and artillery of the Defense Forces performed 1,829 fire missions during the day,” wrote Tarnavskyi. “Over the last day, the enemy’s losses in killed and wounded amounted to more than four companies.”

Depending on the type of troops, a company in the Russian army can number anywhere from 30 to 150 soldiers, according to GlobalSecurity.org, a U.S. think tank.

Tarnavskyi said Ukraine destroyed and damaged 77 items of Russian military equipment.
“In particular, a Ka-52 helicopter, 24 tanks, 12 BMP units, 5 BBM, 3 MTLB [various types of armored vehicles], 2 armored personnel carriers, 2 Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicle, a Zala unmanned aerial vehicle, Sturm-S anti-tank missile system.”

He added that Ukraine’s armed forces destroyed 12 Russian ammunition storage sites.

The British Defense Ministry assessed on Sunday that both Russia and Ukraine have suffered significant losses since the counteroffensive kicked off.

“In recent days, heavy fighting has continued, with the most intense combat focused in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, western Donetsk Oblast, and around Bakhmut,” it said, noting that Ukraine has made small advances in these areas.

“In the south, Russian forces often conduct relatively effective defensive operations. Both sides are suffering high casualties, with Russian losses likely the highest since the peak of the battle for Bakhmut in March,” the ministry said.

Zelensky on Sunday praised Ukraine’s armed forces for being “very effective in repelling assaults” near Avdiivka in the Donetsk region.

“Our troops are on the move: position by position, step by step, we are going forward,” he said.
Newsweek has contacted Russia’s Defense Ministry for comment via email.

Putin’s ‘Big Lie’ Might Be A Scheme To Exit The Ukraine War
Alexander Motyl
Military, Defense & National Security News: 19FortyFive
6-19-2023 9:40 a.m. EDT

You may recall that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin launched his second invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 with two goals in mind: Ukraine’s “demilitarization” and “de-Nazification.”

Both goals were absurd, as Ukraine posed absolutely no military threat to Russia and the number of bona fide Ukrainian Nazis could be counted on the fingers of one hand.

Both goals were especially absurd as it was Putin’s Russia that threatened Ukraine militarily and adopted all the earmarks of a fascist regime: authoritarianism, chauvinism, a bloodthirsty dictator, and a cult of personality.
Whatever the case, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov recently announced the good news: Ukraine has been demilitarized!

Here are his exact words:
“Indeed, Ukraine was heavily militarized at the time of the beginning of the Special Military Operation. And, as Putin said yesterday, one of the tasks was to demilitarize Ukraine. In fact, this task is largely completed. Ukraine is using less and less of its weapons. And more and more it uses the weapons systems that Western countries supply it with.”

Peskov’s is a strikingly bizarre interpretation of demilitarization. True, Ukraine has used up much of the equipment and ammunition that hailed from Soviet days. Equally true, it’s been the recipient of far more effective and modern and NATO-compatible weapons systems from the fifty-plus countries in the Ramstein group.

Just how this amounts to demilitarization, especially at a time when Ukraine has launched what appears to be a successful counteroffensive, is unclear.

By the same logic, Peskov could claim that NATO enlargement has been stopped because Finland joined the alliance and there’s no one to its east.

On the other hand, Peskov’s illogic makes perfect sense. Since, as the Kremlin claims, Russia never attacked Ukraine, its bombs never fell on civilians, the Kakhovka dam explosion was the handiwork of those crazy Ukrainians, the Bucha massacre never happened, and, oh yes, Putin is a true-blue democrat—why not continue substituting delusion for reality?

Of course, there may be more than just silliness at work here. Imagine that Putin and his comrades in arms know that the war is going badly. After all, despite the incessant bluster to the contrary, how can they not? Imagine as well that they’re looking for an elegant way out of the mess. So, why not declare victory and use it as the rationale for a gradual draw-down?

That may be too clever by half for Putin and Co.

Alternatively, as Samuel Johnson said in 1777, “Depend upon it, sir, when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully.”

“ The Battle of Pyatikhatki (Five Houses) will go down in military history.

The settlement is in the lowlands. To the south—our forces stand on the heights with artillery, assisted by the airforce.

AFU is pushing into the village, because it’s a sort of a key to further advance—a fork in the road.

We provoke, retreat, they enter, we burn them and return. And so it goes on day after day.

It is clear to everyone that the Ukrainians have to pass through Pyatikhatki to move forward, but that is the art of the Russian Armed Forces: they can not go further. They can go in and die. Or they don’t go further at all.

When there will be an opportunity to show all the burnt equipment and soldiers of the AFU at Pyatikhatki, the world will be horrified.”

Russian Army Hit by Cholera Outbreak After Kakhovka Dam Flooding
Isabel van Brugen On
6/19/23 at 8:58 AM ED
Newsweek
https://www.newsweek.com/russian-army-soldiers-cholera-outbreak-kakhovka-dam-flooding-destruction-1807620?spot_im_redirect_source=pitc

The Russian army has been hit by a cholera outbreak, days after the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine caused catastrophic flooding, a military partisan movement has said.

Atesh, a military movement of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars, which has 41,000 subscribers on Telegram, cited “informants” from military hospitals of the Kherson region and Crimea as saying that many Russian soldiers are being admitted daily with suspected cases of cholera, a potentially deadly bacterial disease. Several Russian troops have died, the group said.

The reports come after the Soviet-era dam—part of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station in southern Ukraine on the Dnieper River—was breached in the early hours of June 6, unleashing water on swaths of land as a long-anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive to take back the seized territories kicked off. The death toll from the flooding has risen to 52

Russia maintains that it wasn’t behind its collapse and has accused Ukraine of blowing up the dam to distract attention from a “faltering” counteroffensive. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russian forces of blowing up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station dam from inside the facility as part of a “terrorist attack.”

On June 13, Oleh Pavlenko, the head of Ukraine’s State Environmental Inspectorate, said cholera and e.coli were found in water supplies in southern Ukraine.
“The occupiers are suffering from a cholera epidemic,” Atesh, which carries out sabotage against Russian forces and their collaborators, wrote on its Telegram page.

“Entire units from the Kherson direction located along the North Crimean Canal [have lost] their combat capability and are taken to the rear for treatment. Several Russian soldiers died.”

The group said the outbreak is likely due to Russian troops using water “from open sources” because “there are difficulties with the delivery of bottled or simply purified water to the occupiers” due to the flooding.

“Naturally, the explosion of the Kakhovka dam caused enormous damage to nature, revealing many diseases that we will hear about,” the group added. “We urge the residents of the Kherson region and the Crimea to be especially attentive to the water you [consume].”

In an interview with The New Voice of Ukraine’s NV.UA news website, Ihor Kuzin, Ukraine’s chief state sanitary doctor, said Ukraine is ready to fight a cholera epidemic.

Newsweek has contacted Russia’s Defense Ministry via email for comment.

Ukraine war latest: Defense Ministry reports new gains in the south, ‘difficult situation’ in the east
The Kyiv Independent
Daria Shulzhenko and The Kyiv Independent news desk
June 19, 2023 11:56 PM
https://kyivindependent.com/ukraine-war-latest-defense-ministry-reports-new-gains-in-the-south-difficult-situation-in-the-east/

Key developments on June 19:

-Defense Ministry confirms liberation of Piatykhatky in southern Zaporizhzhia Oblast, but reports ‘difficult situation’ in the east

-UK’s sanctions to last until Russia pays for Ukraine’s reconstruction

-Russia launches drones, missiles at Ukraine overnight

-Russian officials claim new attacks in Russia, occupied Crimea.

1. Ukraine confirmed the liberation of Piatykhatky village in Zaporizhzhia Oblast on June 19, bringing the total number of liberated settlements since the start of the ongoing counteroffensive to eight.

The announcement comes after Russian-installed proxy in Zaporizhzhia Oblast Vladimir Rogov said that Ukrainian troops took the village on June 18, but Russia’s Defense Ministry later denied it.

Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar wrote on Telegram on June 19 that Ukrainian forces have so far liberated Novodarivka, Levadne, Storozheve, Makarivka, Blahodatne, Lobkove, Neskuchne, and Piatykhatky, recapturing an area of 113 square kilometers.

According to her, Ukrainian forces have advanced up to seven kilometers in the south.

Also on June 19, the U.K. Defense Ministry reported that Russia had begun relocating its forces from the eastern bank of the Dnipro River in Kherson Oblast to strengthen the Zaporizhzhia and Bakhmut sectors.

Later in the same day, Maliar said that Russia had deployed more troops to Ukraine’s eastern front line, trying to advance toward Lyman and Kupiansk and “seize the initiative.”

According to her, Russia has concentrated “a significant number” of its troops in Ukraine’s east and hasn’t abandoned its plans to seize the entirety of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, which is currently “the main offensive area” of the Russian troops.

Ukrainian forces “do not allow the enemy to advance” amid the difficult situation in the region, intensified Russian shelling and heavy fighting, Maliar said.

UK to use sanctions to make Russia pay for Ukraine’s reconstruction

2. The U.K. plans to use asset freezing and sanctions to make Russia pay for Ukraine’s reconstruction.

In the press release obtained by the Kyiv Independent on June 19, the U.K. government says the planned package of measures will enable them to keep sanctions in place by amending their purpose.

According to the press release, their newly stated aim will be to promote compensation payments from Russia to Ukraine.

The measure will also allow sanctioned Russians to release their frozen funds for Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction.

Although this will be a completely voluntary process, as the individuals will not be coerced into doing so, they will not receive any sanctions relief in exchange for donations, reads the press release.

“Putin’s Russia must take financial responsibility for the wanton devastation it has wrought on Ukraine,” Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt said.

“These new measures - on top of our largest sanctions package – show the U.K. is ready and able to clear new paths to ensure Russian money reaches Ukrainian people.”
Browder: ‘West must hand Russian Central Bank’s $350 billion to Ukraine for reconstruction’

3. Russia attacks Ukraine with cruise missiles, drones overnight

Russia launched four cruise missiles and four kamikaze drones at Ukraine’s southern and eastern regions overnight on June 19.

According to the Air Force of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, all of the missiles and drones targeting Ukraine were shot down by the country’s air defenses.

The Air Force said four Russian Kalibr cruise missiles were launched from a submarine in the Black Sea.

Earlier that night, explosions were heard in the southern port of Odesa.

Serhii Bratchuk, the head of the Public Council under the Odesa Regional Military Administration, later confirmed that the cruise missiles targeted Odesa Oblast but were all destroyed.

Four Shahed-136/131 drones were launched from the eastern coast of the Azov Sea, the Air Force said.

On the morning of June 19, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Governor also reported the downing of all four Russian drones in the oblast.

EU top justice official: We aren’t waiting for war’s end to prosecute Russian crimes

4. Russian officials claim new attacks in Russia, occupied Crimea

On the morning of June 19, Belgorod Oblast Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov claimed that the Russian town of Valuyki in Belgorod Oblast was under artillery and rocket attack.

Gladkov claimed that seven people were moderately injured as the strike damaged five apartment buildings and four homes and caused a fire in one of the buildings.

Belgorod Oblast, which borders Ukraine, saw fighting in May and June as Russian anti-Kremlin militias conducted incursions in the oblast’s territory.

Also on June 19, Russian-installed proxy in occupied Crimea Sergey Aksyonov claimed that drones attacked the north of the peninsula overnight.

Aksyonov claimed the drones allegedly flew at low altitudes and Russian air defenses were active without providing further details.

Explosions and fires have regularly been reported in the Russian-occupied Crimea since August 2022. Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly vowed to return Crimea to Ukraine.

Yeah, just as Russia “welcomed home” those Soviet troops who had surrendered to the Germans in WWII (many of whom were sent to various gulags or outright killed). I would assume any sane Russian who fled Russia in 2022-2023 would be thinking, “No thanks!”

How can a country be dragged step by step towards disaster? Of course, there are many different answers to this question. And most of these answers are probably correct. And the catastrophe that Russia is gradually drifting towards has a lot to do with these answers. Let us seek an answer to this question.

Putin’s personal ambitions represent the beginning of the process that is leading Russia to disaster. But this catastrophe is not only linked to Putin’s decisions. Russia seems to be facing a major betrayal very soon! Putin’s regime is about to face new problems as many different elements are destabilizing Russia more and more. This time, the troublemaker is an entity we know very well. Behind one of the major moves that will prepare this catastrophe are Russia’s loyal allies, the Chechens. Chechen troops are preparing a great betrayal against Russia!

There have been many times in the history of the world when a state has been wiped off the stage of history due to the betrayal of its allies. When an ally’s own interests become more important than the interests of the other ally, it will lead to betrayal. The interests of the Chechens, who sided with Russia in the war between Russia and Ukraine, have also come into conflict with the interests of the Russian government. Chechen soldiers do not want to die for Russia. The orders of the Russian army are being ignored by Chechen troops! Let’s take a look at the latest developments regarding the Chechen uprising.

You can subscribe to our channel to be informed about the developments in the Russia-Ukraine war, turn on notifications so as not to miss daily map updates, our analysis of the war and support us by liking our reports.

One of the most striking events in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has undoubtedly been the cross-border operations carried out within Russian borders. Russia never expected that Ukrainian troops would show such courage. In fact, Russia made the same mistake it had been making since the beginning of the war, underestimating Ukraine and the Ukrainian army. However, Russia made a big mistake again by overlooking that the most important rule of war is not to underestimate your opponent.

One would think the Russians who left Russia, to avoid dying in Ukraine, are smart enough to know if they are interned or not.
