SNIP

"Code of Honor" (October 12, 1987) follows the Enterprise-D to the planet of Ligon II, where the inhabitants, audiences are told, abide by a strict [insert episode title]. In an unwise creative choice, the Ligonians were dressed to resemble, essentially, "African tribesmen" stereotypes straight out of a 1940s theatrical serial. The Ligonian king Lutan (Jessie Lawrence Ferguson) would kidnap Lieutenant Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) and force her to fight his wife Yareena (Karole Selmon) in a duel to the death. In addition to the stereotypes, there is a lot of sexist language in "Code of Honor" wherein Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) plays along with Lutan's misogyny. It's one of the low points of the series.

The cast even felt that way at the time. In a 2012 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Stewart noted that the series didn't get good until its second season, and cited "Code of Honor" as evidence. Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander Riker on "Next Generation" has remained negative about the episode as well, telling Trek Nation in 2007 that he wanted to see the episode struck from reruns and from home video.

SNIP

According to Larry Nemecek's indispensable sourcebook "The Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion," the original conception for the episode was to feature a species of reptiles whose code of honor was modeled after that of samurai. According to well-communicated production notes, it was the episode's first director, a man named Russ Mayberry, who cast Black actors as the Ligonians and wanted to dress them in their unusual outfits. Word on the street was Gene Roddenberry fired Mayberry during production. Actor Wil Wheaton, who played Wesley Crusher on "The Next Generation," heard that the director treated the Black actors poorly.

It is not a stereotype if it is true.

Or, it became a stereotype because it is true.

Frakes should go ahead and list all the books he desires burned while he’s at it.

It is simply a terrible script.

Agreed.

This is why I keep hard copies of DVDs—they can’t reinvent history at my house.

Borg episodes

I disagree. The introductory episodes, pts. 1&2, were excellent episodes. This was an enemy that was a threat to the galaxy. I loved the introduction of the Borg Theme music. I remember that we had taped these 2 episodes and I played them for my brother and sister-in-law when they came for a visit. When the first episode finished, my brother looked at me and asked, "You did tape the 2nd episode didn't you?". And, they were not Star Trek fans.

That assumes viewers are on Picard’s and the Federation’s side.

How many are just “hate watching” the series and hate the Federation because it’s too imperialistic or not imperialistic enough?

I respectfully suggest that "Porgy and Bess" be stricken from our culture

I hate to break it to you; but, Porgy and Bess HAS been cancelled. For quite a while now. You will never see another production of that show.

Yeah, some sites link another site, which links to another site, and so on, until you finally get a link to the original article.

I hate this sort of clickbait.

There was a famous article that came out during the 2000s (I think) about the "liberal fascism" of Star Trek.

It made some good points. You have a kind of Galactic Government that claims everyone has autonomy (the Prime Directive), yet is constantly interfering in member planets' affairs.

And Star Fleet is a kind of Military-Industrial Complex that exercises way too much influence at home.

Star Fleet exhibits liberal fascist values -- multicultural diversity, gender diversity, feminism, and its notion of "democracy and freedom" -- all of which it ruthlessly imposes on weaker planets.

OMG! Honestly, a few years ago P&B was considered the most racist thing ever. What Happened? Really, what happened? What changed people's minds?

Hey speaking of Star Trek has anyone watched any episodes of “Star Trek Continues”? It’s pretty good...it’s captured the TOS feel, music and flavor albeit with different actors. But pretty cool nonetheless.

#54 The videos were good but CBS Les Moonves stopped all fan films as they had a new star trek show starting. He later was removed from cbs after it became publicly known that he assaulted women in his office. He destroyed many actress’s careers.

Anything Wil Wheaton has to say is suspect. He hates conservatives and William Shatner. He swears every sentence as well showing low intelligence.

He is the definition of a ‘Wesley Crusher’ but not as bright.
Sheldon from ‘The Big Bang Theory’ says that Wil Wheaton is only allowed at a star trek convention if he helps setup.

By that stupid standard, the movie Black Panther should never be broadcast again.

I think I don’t like them NOT because they weren’t done well, but because they scare me. The collective is so overwhelming, so all-encompassing and it is very repellent to me. I’ll take the blue pill, please. At least when I’m watching some escapism.

In one episode Frakes wore a shirt and a earring on a women dominated planet that made him look so beyond gay. He also had a bad habit of putting his leg up on the bridge navigation console in front of female and male crew while talking to them.... Picard wore some gay outfit when he visited a couple of planets while on vacation.
If they burn those episodes it would be a great start.
