Citicoline – a neuroprotector with proven effects on glaucomatous disease (Multiple studies - Helps eye cells under high pressure)

Abstract

Citicoline is the generic name of cytidine-5’-diphosphocholine (CDP-choline), an endogenous compound that is able to increase the levels of neurotransmitters in the central nervous system by interacting with the synthesis of cellular membranes phospholipids, especially phosphatidylcholine. Exogenous Citicoline, administered by ingestion or injection, is hydrolyzed and dephosphorylated in order to form cytidine and choline, which resynthesize CDP-choline inside brain cells. It has proven neuroprotective effects in Alzheimer disease, stroke, and Parkinson’s disease, as well as in glaucoma and amblyopia. Citicoline acts as a neuroprotector for those patients with progressive glaucomatous disease in spite of well-controlled intraocular pressure. The purpose of this review was to outline the main features of Citicoline and the evidences of its effect in glaucoma.

TOPICS: Health/Medicine
KEYWORDS: glaucoma
This is a part of series on glaucoma therapies which could augment whatever one is currently doing.

This paper rounded up a number of other studies on citicoline, also known as CDP-choline, and its beneficial effect on glaucoma.

Some studies used muscle-injected citicoline, but others showed similar benefits to oral citicoline. Citicoline appears to help various impacted cells while under high pressure duress.

From the study:

“Improvement of visual field and electrophysiological parameters after treatment” - Figure 4 [Seemed to have reasonable improvement.]

“Citicoline may play a role in the second step, acting between the dysfunction and the apoptosis of RGC.”

A happy spot to consider appears to be 500 mg, once or twice a day, from my review of the paper.

The study’s free PDF link is available from the drop-down at the NIH site.

I took citicoline for awhile and felt it helped my mental functioning. I’ve stopped it because of the expense. I take a large variety of supplements so have to take cost into account. I may get back on it again at some point.

It’s not much fun aging is it? I have gone almost 3 years without seeing a doctor and have stayed healthy except for the Blephrospasem (eyes) and have lately notice that dementia has begun to slip into my brain. I do have an eye doctor since I was 50. I don’t consider him a doctor. I hesitate to use any medicine. The last time I saw a doctor was right after covid popped up and the doctor I saw screamed at me because I asked the question. “If I should contact Covid will you give me Ivermedtin?” I never went back. I didn’t get covid or a vacine. (I will be 90 in Dec.) I think I may give this Citicoline a try if I ever have a Dr. again. I’ve done very well with supplements and exercise.

I tried CitiCoOnline but it just downloaded a bunch of spyware on my computer. Then I figured out it was not Citibank.

I have had high eye pressures since my 20s (71 now). Well over what normally calls for treatment. However, for unknown reasons they have had no effect on the health of my optic nerve. Some years ago I was asked to participate in a study of people who do not seem to suffer damage from high pressures. I declined.

My OD checks them every 6 months and once a year uses some high tech machine that actually maps the thickness of the nerve.

Pressures dropped dramatically for about 6-12 months after cataract surgery, but returned to the usual after that.

Hey, everyone, webheart is an admitted failed (romance?) novelist who worked in a peon position at a newspaper!

Poor webheart:

“I think I may give this Citicoline a try if I ever have a Dr. again.”

It’s available in supplement form so you won’t need a prescription. The spice Rosemary is also suppose to be helpful in Alzheimer’s disease.
