I recall one or more occasions driving on a errand with a coworker. We might have been discussing the rather cold weather. We would pass a Credit Union with a temperature display in its outdoor business sign.

I'd say,
"According to the sign it's 45 degrees outside."

He would reply,
"That's not the outside temperature, that's the temperature of the sign."

I was in the sign business for 25 years. Depends on placement and whether or not the installers calibrate it to adjust for placement which they never do because that would require monitoring it for some time. Most of the time they're in the metal skirt that hides the steel pipe that the sign is on. Sometimes that skirt is white, sometimes a dark color. Some may get afternoon shade or have a shady side, some sit in the middle of a hot parking lot. Often you simply can't adjust them to be accurate at all times of the day or year but it's never really attempted anyway.
