The address was off by a single letter.
Losing a beloved fury family member can be tough on anyone. It's even worse when that death was caused by a police officer who was sent to the wrong address. That's exactly what happened to a family's dog in Waco on Saturday, June 3.
“The Waco Police Department is saddened by the unfortunate shooting resulting in the death of Finn, a beloved pet,” the Waco Police Department wrote in a Facebook post.
The incident occurred after a call of a reported break in. While dispatchers correctly entered in the address, it autocorrected to a different address — off by a single letter, according to the post.
When officers arrived they noticed the backdoor ajar, which aligned with the situation reported by the caller, and acted. After announcing their presence, multiple dogs came toward them, according to the post. Officers retreated, however, one dog, who allegedly acted more aggressively, lunged at an officer. The officer retreated again and the dog lunged once more. The officer then made the decision to fire one round at the dog.
The dog's owner took Finn to an emergency medial clinic where he later succumbed to his injuries. The grieving family is devastated by his passing and a family friend has launched a GoFundMe campaign to hire a lawyer for the family.
"I got a call from my best friend in hysterics, telling me to come to her house because the WACO POLICE DEPARTMENT came into her yard, and SHOT and KILLED her 10 year old black lab Finn," Tori Russell writes on the GoFundMe. "[Officers] have now left this once peaceful little home in complete tragedy and disarray."
In response to the incident, the Waco Police Department is working to confirm each address is entered correctly in its system and are communicating with the system's manufacturer to prevent something like this from happening again, according to the post.
As of early Wednesday, June 7, the Justice for Finn! fundraising campaign had already exceeded it's $7,000 goal and amassed nearly 200 donations.
A picture of the snarling, vicious Cujo.
You know a dog is ferocious, when it lets its owner put a cape on it.
Has anyone else every heard that expression, "Measure Twice, Cut Once." If the going to the wrong address could lead to a person or an animal getting killed, why not be extra cautious?
Black Labs are protective dogs, they take care of their people and homes, and especially kids. The dog saw an armed intruder around the hoke and reacted like a black lab would.
I’d probably have shot the dam officer if it was my dog. Color of law eff up won’t save his/her ass.
I grew up with Black Labs. I don’t remember them ever getting hostile with anyone. Visitors got the benefit of the doubt.
Shit keeps happening in WACO.
They can sense problem people. They protect their families. We had one as a neighborhood dog, taken care of by an older woman. He watched out for all the kids in the neighborhood.
Some cops are really bent in the head. I'm honestly think some of them
look forward to the chance to kill a dog. It's endemic among cops.
Measure twice, cut once.....
I Measure 3 or 4 times as I work with extremely expensive Canadian Cedar these days. Cannot risk it.
Same should be applied to every job.
Poor family and dog.
Definitely.
x 2.
Went to Tech School in Whacko (actually
Bellmead, north of Waco). That’s what we called it.
Autocorrect, again.
I’m sorry about the dog. I hope the vet bills get covered, but a go fund me account for this?
I think the cops dropped by the printer and took out that one R. Looks better for them that way.
I don’t know why everyone has to start a GoFundMe for everything these days, but they do.
My black lab will bark but that’s all he will do. He LOOOOOVES people and goes up to everybody to beg for pets and belly rubs.
That one looked like a lab mix. His ears were not as droopy as lab’s ears are and his muzzle looked a little thinner than a purebreed lab.
I can do without “fury family members.”
Every time I would see a WACKO police officer I would yell...”Hey officer!” “Your eyes look glazed over, you shoot anybody’s dog today?”
A lot of these cops are former military. They are running on military methods.
My old next door neighbor had a damn mean black lab.
The damn thing cornered me in my own garage.
I hit it in the head with a shovel, full swing.
They gave the dog away.
“While dispatchers correctly entered in the address, it autocorrected to a different address”
Why the hell would they have autocorrect on?
That is my experience as well. A couple I know went out to eat. When they got home they noticed that the dog's food bowl was half full when it should be empty. They checked their house and they had been burglarized. The crooks fed the black lab. Needless to say, that incident became a constant joke: "If I feed your dog a steak, will it show me where the guns are hidden?"
