A father forced his grossed-out young daughter to gut a fish he bought at the store to teach her a “life skill” — and he’s now asking strangers on the internet if it was wrong to do so after his wife grew angry at him.
The 38-year-old dad of two girls, 13 and 10, posted in the popular Reddit group “Am I the A–hole” to ask that exact question after teaching his older daughter to debone and descale a fish against her will.
Fair_Moose_4755 explained that he and his wife have been teaching their girls a variety of “life skills such as cooking, cleaning and car maintenance” and recently the family went on a camping trip. His oldest daughter learned to make the fire, pitch the tent and go fishing, he wrote.

Well, some girls are handy and take to that stuff but I think most just won’t. Men at least have an innate interest in stuff like machines and tools, so there is something to get a boy fired up about, but to most girls it’s just nasty, dirty drudgery.
😂
Always wonder what a monkey, left handed or no, needed a wrench for.
We also held snipe hunts...at night of course.
Changing a tire is good for all kids and adults to learn. But gutting a fish if she didn’t want to is unnecessary. When will she ever be in the position to have to gut a fish? He watches too many movies.
being a city boy i know my meat comes from the butcher... but when i get hungry enough, i am a fast learner...
You guys are too old. There’s things called grocery stores now. They are equipped with all your eating needs.
What’s wrong are these people that go to REDDIT to get personal validation so they can be ‘right’.
Second only to that are the news media trying to ‘make a story’ from this emotional support crutch - what, a made-up poll wasn’t good enough today?
Do the right thing, and who gives a rats azz what others think.
That’s a precious memory for all your family!
She will ace biology in a year or so when they have to cut into worms and frogs...!!!!
I was cleaning fish at ten and shooting a gun at eleven or twelve. Good skills. Thanks Dad.
He just wanted some attention.
I do a lot of things without notifying the internet….
We have a society on the way to terminal crash. The survivors will be those with real life skills.
The casualties will be those who only learned to be totally dependent on the government.
He is A-hole for posting it all over the internet.
a rabbit...
In Colorado when I was riding a bus to work some woman who sat next to me criticize the RMEF Bugle magazine I was reading and questioned how could I hunt innocent animals. So I asked if she ate meat and she said yes and she bought her meat at a grocery store. My follow up statement to her was that she would rather hire an assassin to kill her animal and then have it neatly wrapped at a store, while I rather eliminate the middle-man and harvest my own. Better quality. Needless to say the conversation didn’t last long.
Screw the family. Make the girl render a deer next.
"seeing deer hanging in the garage for years"
Usually by mid summer - mighty fine jerky by then 😂
She coulda helped mommy toss a salad.
The proper way to clean a fish is to get a beer in a bottle remove the cap, take a slug of beer, and use the cap to hold the fish down with one finger while you skin it with the other hand, screw that scaling BS... OR gut it, keep the head on, ram a stick down the gullet and roast it like a marshmallow. Pick at it... I call that good eatin’ right there.
correct !
I’ve never needed to gut a fish, and we never taught any of our four daughters to gut one either.
Yes, he was wrong. IF she had expressed interest in learning, then it would have been appropriate.
