Transcript 0:00 · hi folks quick intro before I start this 0:03 · video proper sometimes when I do a lot 0:05 · of research for a video and I just chuck 0:07 · all these ideas down into a rough script 0:09 · I worry that it doesn't flow properly I 0:11 · think this video does but you're gonna 0:13 · have to pay attention because even I do 0:16 · when I watch it over again nevertheless 0:18 · this is me trying to find the lost Roman 0:21 · town of vindomi it appears on a Roman 0:23 · list a list being a journey from A to B 0:26 · in all the towns in between one of those 0:28 · towns is vindomio vindomis but nobody 0:32 · knows where it is this is my journey to 0:34 · try and find that lost Town using a lot 0:37 · of different sources a lot of different 0:38 · information so bear with it stick with 0:40 · it there's a lot going on enjoy the 0:42 · video Let's Roll the VT 0:49 · [Music] 0:54 · thank you 0:56 · on this channel we normally make videos 0:59 · about old routes whether it's an 1:02 · abandoned Canal Roman Road ancient 1:04 · trackway you name it 1:08 · [Music] 1:11 · but today we're going to do something we 1:13 · haven't done before today we're going to 1:15 · search for something static 1:17 · [Music] 1:19 · but in order to do that we need to look 1:23 · at the root because as is often the case 1:25 · the clues are in the journey 1:30 · [Music] 1:38 · welcome to the search for the Lost Roman 1:42 · town of indomie 1:48 · welcome 1:49 · [Music] 1:50 · now today's Journey Starts Here Farley 1:54 · Mount fully just to the uh West a few 1:57 · miles west of Winchester down there in 1:59 · the trees in the distance and right 2:01 · across the valley in front of us is a 2:03 · Roman Road that's route 45a and it went 2:06 · between Winchester and serum part of a 2:09 · bigger route we'll come to that shortly 2:11 · but Folly was built to commemorate a 2:14 · horse was a very curious name the horse 2:16 · was called beware chalk pit that's not a 2:20 · warning that's the name of the horse 2:23 · so 1735 and apparently the horse that 2:26 · was buried under here won a important 2:29 · race the owner a year before was riding 2:32 · the horse and it fell into a 25 foot 2:34 · deep chalk pit hence the name 2:38 · so back to Roman Rhodes 2:40 · I'll continue for your sanity and 2:42 · probably mine too to use the modern name 2:45 · for the Roman towns we're talking about 2:47 · my head just back down the hill towards 2:51 · the serum the Winchester route well our 2:55 · story actually doesn't start there for 2:57 · that we need to head all the way down to 2:59 · Exeter 3:04 · okay so I'm not actually gonna head all 3:06 · the way to Exeter instead we'll use some 3:09 · funky Graphics a bit like this this is a 3:13 · route between silchester in North West 3:15 · Hampshire all the way down to Exeter 3:18 · it has a number of important towns along 3:20 · its route we'll come to that shortly now 3:23 · Roman roads have numbers which are 3:25 · relatively new addition Ivan McGarry 3:27 · came up with a system similar to that 3:29 · used on Modern roads today but for the 3:32 · purpose of this video that doesn't 3:34 · really matter what does matter is how we 3:37 · know this route was actually a route 3:43 · foreign 3:44 · [Music] 3:48 · so the Romans used to use lists love a 3:51 · good list let's call them itineraries 3:54 · now one of these was of the Roman 3:56 · Emperor Antonius or Antonius 4:01 · I don't think it was specific to him but 4:03 · nevertheless it was a list of 4:06 · 225 Roots containing uh stopping places 4:10 · stations towns you name it now the most 4:14 · important part of that list to us here 4:16 · in the UK was the last 15 lists on the 4:20 · back end of that itinerary 4:23 · [Music] 4:24 · now whilst they aren't hugely 4:26 · comprehensive to the entire network in 4:28 · fact I think it only contained 25 of the 4:31 · known Roman roads in the UK they did 4:34 · list the mileage and the towns along 4:38 · that route 4:39 · that's where today's mystery comes into 4:42 · play the last route on that list of 15 4:46 · so list x v the road from silchester all 4:50 · the way down to Exeter 4:53 · now the fact that that route was on the 4:56 · end of the UK the British section and 4:59 · that in itself was on the end of the 5:01 · entire itinerary combined with the fact 5:04 · that it's probably been transcribed a 5:06 · few times since we're probably going to 5:08 · be looking for some mistakes and that is 5:10 · where today's mystery was born from 5:14 · so here is that itinerary transcribed 5:17 · once again this time well by me now I'm 5:21 · going to hide most of that for the 5:22 · moment so let's head to Exeter as we do 5:25 · that metaphorically of course let's have 5:27 · a look at one of the oldest maps in 5:29 · existence for yet more context this is 5:32 · the table 5:33 · puttinga a 13th century parchment copy 5:37 · of a Roman map and it's utterly 5:39 · beautiful and extremely not to scale 5:42 · just look at the scrolling I'm having to 5:44 · do to get to the far left end 5:51 · which interestingly and once again means 5:54 · the UK is not great in fact it's largely 5:57 · missing all we have left is a very 6:00 · smudged bit of Southern England so can 6:02 · this help us in any way 6:04 · [Music] 6:17 · yes it can indeed because interestingly 6:20 · it contains the last section of 6:23 · itinerary 15. the guitar sham or near 6:27 · Horizon to Exeter and lo and behold they 6:31 · both match the map itself says 15 15 6:34 · miles and the itinerary itself says 15 6:37 · miles that's brilliant so what's next 6:40 · well let's look at the whole route and 6:43 · I'll measure all of those distances 6:45 · between each town and compare them 6:48 · against the itinerary itself now bear in 6:50 · mind of course I said earlier it's 6:51 · smudged so it's going to have a few 6:53 · mistakes or at least we're expecting a 6:55 · few mistakes 6:56 · foreign 7:00 · make those calculations in the 7:02 · background just arrived at one of my 7:05 · favorite pieces of Roman Road which you 7:07 · can still see today because in the 7:08 · middle of an old Deer Park this is 7:10 · Connell nearly at the top of a chute 7:12 · Causeway where it took a deviation 7:14 · apparently and 7:16 · um yeah in this Deer Park you can still 7:18 · see the the Roman Road today probably 7:20 · sit on that camera but um I just come 7:23 · down this bank here well this is one of 7:25 · the ditches at the side of the Roman 7:27 · Road still mid-november and it's full of 7:30 · vegetation so you're not really going to 7:31 · make any of it out perhaps from the sky 7:34 · you might be able to nevertheless right 7:37 · there in front of me that 7:39 · Bank there is the Roman Road which heads 7:42 · north to cirencester south to Winchester 7:47 · [Music] 7:49 · it's mistakes Bradbury to Dorchester is 7:52 · roughly 18 to 19 miles not as stated so 7:55 · let's change that Bradbury to Serum is 7:57 · 21 not 12. Ashley to Serum is more like 8:02 · 15 not eight Winchester to Ashley is six 8:05 · not eleven 8:08 · so let's stop there because now we've 8:10 · got one last distance to measure between 8:13 · Winchester and silchester now if we draw 8:16 · a direct line between the two well 8:18 · that's 24 miles now the itinerary for 8:21 · this list states the overall route from 8:24 · silchester to Exeter was 136. so that 8:28 · fits pretty well 111 plus 24 has 135 8:33 · that's only a mile out fantastic 8:35 · so why then are we seeing two different 8:37 · measurements between silchester and 8:39 · Winchester we're seeing an XV 15 and 8:42 · we're seeing an xxi for 21 miles that's 8:45 · 36 miles in total and even if we try and 8:48 · draw lines to make those meet in 8:51 · different directions well that seems 8:53 · miles out of the actual line of the 8:55 · route itself 8:58 · [Music] 9:09 · so that's confused antiquarians and 9:12 · anyone that's really sought to try and 9:13 · find vendomus centuries now do you take 9:17 · the literal route of 15 miles and 21 9:19 · miles and therefore make a big deviation 9:22 · in the root or do you take the straight 9:24 · line between the two Winchester and 9:26 · steel tester and make it 22 24 miles 9:34 · in fact some have suggested it's here in 9:36 · Saint maryborn just to the east of 9:39 · Andover because if you take the 15 miles 9:42 · along the portway well that fits quite 9:45 · well but then the 21 Mile passes down to 9:49 · Winchester well that doesn't work and 9:51 · then there is nephem near Alton again 9:54 · the distances could almost work if you 9:56 · take 15 miles south Southeast along 9:58 · Roman Road 155 then you land here and lo 10:03 · and behold well there was a significant 10:06 · Town found here markets dwellings 10:09 · streets you name it 10:11 · the distance from here to Winchester 10:13 · however is around 20 out 10:16 · so let's get back to the mileage let's 10:18 · assume they did indeed head from 10:21 · silchester Street to Winchester let's 10:24 · change the XV to x i i in case that was 10:27 · an error and let's change the xxi to an 10:30 · x i in case that was an error so then we 10:33 · have 12 and 11 and pretty much we bridge 10:36 · that Gap and while that gives us a 10:39 · completely new insight into where we 10:42 · might find vindomis 10:47 · he near the wheat sheath pretty much 10:50 · halfway between the two 10:53 · [Music] 11:01 · now I don't want you to think this is a 11:03 · uh something I've magically come up with 11:05 · this whole theory of course the Roman 11:07 · Road research Association I've been 11:09 · mulling this over for years and as I 11:12 · mentioned antiquarians for decades and 11:15 · centuries alike but it does show you 11:17 · what there is out there still to 11:19 · discover still to discuss and still to 11:21 · almost sit from your own armchair at 11:24 · home and ponder over and of course the 11:27 · one thing that we've learned from this 11:29 · perhaps is it's not always best to start 11:32 · a route from silchester or one specific 11:35 · point maybe sometimes it's good to flip 11:37 · on its head and start the other end 11:39 · where you know something is correct and 11:42 · then work backwards it's a one lesson 11:44 · I've learned today if you've enjoyed 11:46 · this little video 11:47 · hit the like button and uh I'll be back 11:50 · this time next week 11:56 · [Music] 12:03 · [Music]
