Lol! Hilarious. You’re right though, some will.
Any business that pulls those road apples on me has lost my business. Buh-bye!
I refuse to use the damned things. If I do the work, I want a discount!
This is what a collapsing society looks like.
In addition to getting sick of being asked to tip everyone, I’m also sick of being asked to contribute to some corporation’s favorite charity.
Here’s an idea: Donate money out of your profits, not your customers pocket.
I want an Eff U button!
Since I am actually doing the work, they should give me a 20% discount on my purchase.
Nope.
I wonder how limited or how broad a definition of “self check out” they are using. If they mean absolutely NO employee action or interaction, then fine - tipping in such instances is wrong, because it is not a reward for employee services identifiable in any employee’s actions directly for a customer.
But some situations are “self check out” in a more limited sense. For instance, at a coffee shop I go to, the employee only has to enter the order in a machine and the barrista gets the order. The order taker does nothing else. I insert my card in the payment collection device and it takes my payment. It may be just a little more than that if the order taker has to also get a selected pastry out of the case and put in in a small brown bag for me. Yes, that is “limited” self check out and unlike a sit down restaurant it is limited service as well. Is that limited service due a tip??? I think some small tip is OK for that limited service.
“typical 20 percent”? I don’t think so.
Yes, idiot sheeple will tip. Tipping a machine and not knowing or wondering where the money goes. They deserve to not have any money at all.
just stop it people.
Customers are already doing the checkout of their food at grocery stores. When do they start unloading the trucks and stocking the shelves?
if the tip goes to me for doing all the work the. i am for it. Otherwise forget it
the stupid! it burns!!
A tip culture professor? Seriously?
I only tip in jurisdictions where there is NOT a living wage, such as here in Texas. In most Blue States, they already are paid a ‘Living Wage’, so I figure that ‘Living Wage’ is built into the base price of my food.
Is there a button for FU?
I’ve seen this when I use my card at Subway restaurants, but I do occasionally tip there.
The waitresses at the Huddle House have this little card scanners, and the machines ask you to tip, also.
I usually do, because they get wait staff minimum wage, and they’re almost always sweet young ‘uns who are always cheerful.
Yes, we noticed, not only is there an automatic tip step in the checkout process, there are different levels (10%, 20%, etc).
I can imagine the day when the machine will act as if it is malfunctioning, and then some human will be forced to come by to ‘clear’ the issue. Issues happen now off and on with these self checkout stations. Sometimes the store clerk fixing the issue is very customer service oriented. Other times, not so much.
I was blown away by the changes at a very large, Super Walmart. Before the Plandemic, there were about 10 self checkout stations, and over 20 checkout places with a human cashier. After the major shutdown period, I visited the Walmart. It is now almost all self checkout, with 3 checkout stands that can be staffed by a person. Each bank of self checkout stations has one staff to monitor and fix issues.
PS. I just had a thought about that recent viral video of the meat looter loading the stolen meats into her trunk. The store clerk kept trying to pull the cart away, to no avail. It would have been hilarious to take the stolen meat out of the trunk as the thief was loading it up. One could even imagine a Monty Python type of video, where the clerk keeps putting the meat back in the cart.
I just see it as an idiot tax.
