ALPENA TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A teenager from Northern Michigan saved his sister from an attempted abduction by using a slingshot to fight off a man, police say.
It can be compared to an underdog David versus Goliath type of story.
Michigan State Police out of the Alpena area had reported that on May 10, an 8-year-old girl was out mushroom hunting in her backyard when a 17-year-old appeared out of the woods.
Officials say that the 17-year-old approached the 8-year-old girl and held her mouth shut, preventing her from screaming, and attempted to drag her into the woods near her home.
The girl’s brother Owen Burns, 13, saw the 17-year-old attempting an abduction and started shooting at the man using a slingshot. He hit the attempting abductor in the head and chest.
After being struck, the 17-year-old fled and was found by Michigan State troopers. The suspect was hiding at a nearby gas station.
Police say that the teenager had intentions of beating up the 8-year-old girl.
“I am just happy we were able to celebrate her birthday that Saturday after,” said Margaret Burns. “I mean, we could be celebrating a funeral or something else.”
The suspect is facing assault and battery and attempted kidnapping charges.

I read this story a few days ago as well.
I had read it again somewhere this morning and mentioned to my husband that I bet the young guy’s friends will want him to teach them how to use the “flip” as well. A marble and a piece of gravel were good handy projectiles to use and he has obviously practiced enough to have great aim.
In NJ, the kid would have been charged since slingshots are illegal in NJ. Complete idiocy.

I bet there will be a sudden demand for wrist rockets as a lot of people start, not only refreshing their skills from their child-hood, but also teaching their children the fun of knocking down a soft-drink can with just a quick “flip”. As you said, marbles, ball-bearings, rocks, etc. are great to use as ammunition. But, as many of us learned from a young age, avoid aiming that ammo at windows, both those on the house and the vehicles in the driveway.
I have one similar to the one shown, but mine has a forearm brace attached to it. I use ball bearings for ammo and I can put one through 1/2” plywood at 7 yards. Had that been my daughter, that kid’s skull would have been penetrated.

We have em at Academy Sports. I imagine you can get one at any big-box sporting goods that firearms, bows, etc.
Nice to see the truth leak out, once in awhile. David was not the Underdog.
