As an aside, when I was growing up, the only thing we were allowed to request on our birthdays was what kind of cake or pie we would like to have for dessert. Most every time I chose Devil’s food cake, though sometimes I picked strawberry cake.
In school, back when they actually cooked foods and stuff from scratch for lunches, they served a devils food chocolate cake that was absolutely delicious! baked on a huge tray and cut into 2 inch squares.
All the flour and sugar and raw materials were government surplus.................................
